Role Overview

We are seeking a senior, hands-on Head of Engineering to own the technical architecture of an AI-driven ERP integration product and build alongside the engineering team.

This role is ideal for an architect-level engineer who still writes production code, leads by building, makes strong technical decisions, and can guide a fast-moving product from development into scalable production rollout.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the overall technical architecture across the entire product.
• Make key architecture, integration, scalability, and technology decisions.
• Write production code on a day-to-day basis and remain close to product delivery.
• Lead the engineering team through hands-on technical contribution rather than delegation alone.
• Design systems that integrate with external ERP and enterprise platforms.
• Build scalable, repeatable integration patterns for manufacturing customers.
• Support the development of AI-powered capabilities for inventory, finance, and cash-management use cases.
• Lead architecture decisions for data flow, APIs, backend services, AI integration, system reliability, and deployment.
• Work with modern AI, agentic tooling, and LLM-based integrations where required.
• Set engineering standards across code quality, design practices, testing, reviews, and production readiness.
• Define and implement AI-assisted development practices to improve engineering speed and quality.
• Review code, guide technical design, and ensure maintainable engineering practices.
• Align technical execution with the customer roadmap and business priorities.
• Work closely with product, customer, and business stakeholders to convert requirements into practical technical solutions.
• Ensure the product is built to support fast rollout, repeatability, reliability, and future scale.
• Lead a flat, hands-on engineering team based in Colombo.
• Mentor engineers while maintaining a strong builder mindset.
• Troubleshoot complex technical problems across backend systems, integrations, databases, and AI workflows.
• Support deployment, monitoring, performance optimization, and production issue resolution.
• Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, development workflows, and release practices.
• Ensure the team ships reliable, high-quality software under real business deadlines.

Candidate Profile

• Senior hands-on engineer with strong architecture ownership experience.
• Proven experience as a Head of Engineering, Chief Architect, Technical Architect, Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, Lead Engineer, or similar role.
• Strong ability to write production-grade code while leading technical direction.
• Strong expertise in Python, Java, and SQL.
• Experience designing and building scalable backend systems and enterprise-grade software products.
• Experience integrating with external systems, ERP platforms, enterprise platforms, APIs, or complex business applications.
• Strong understanding of system architecture, distributed systems, data modelling, APIs, scalability, and performance.
• Experience with modern AI tools, agentic workflows, LLM integration, or AI-enabled product development.
• Proven track record of taking products from build stage into production and scaling them.
• Experience working in fast-paced, early-stage, startup, or product-led environments.
• Strong understanding of software engineering standards, code reviews, testing, CI/CD, and production-readiness practices.
• Ability to make practical technical decisions that balance speed, quality, scalability, and customer requirements.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to simplify complex technical challenges.
• Ability to work closely with product and business teams while staying deeply technical.
• Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide a flat, hands-on engineering team.
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly.
• Comfortable working under deadlines and shipping reliable software quickly.
• Builder mindset, strong ownership, high accountability, and willingness to stay close to the code.

Preferred Experience

• Experience building AI products, ERP integrations, manufacturing technology, finance technology, or enterprise automation products.
• Experience working with manufacturing companies or solving inventory, finance, cash-management, or operational workflow problems.
• Experience with cloud platforms, DevOps practices, containerization, observability, and scalable deployment environments.
• Experience using AI-assisted coding tools and introducing modern engineering workflows into development teams.
