We are looking for an experienced Marine Claims Manager for a global shipping client. In this role, you will manage claims and litigations lodged by customers, lawyers, recovery agents, and insurers across the APAC region. You will also oversee cargo claims management processes and take responsibility for a designated number of Ports of Discharge (PODs). The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of marine insurance and claims management experience, with strong expertise in maritime laws and conventions related to cargo liabilities. 

Responsibilities:

  • Handle direct customer claims, as well as claims from other carriers, insurers, lawyers, and recovery agents.
  • Ensure timely responses and resolution of cargo claims and lawsuits with minimal impact on operations and markets.
  • Negotiate cargo claims settlements on the most favorable terms, guided by legal principles.
  • Identify potential third-party liabilities and actively pursue cargo claims recovery.
  • Manage and follow up on cargo claims reimbursements from insurers.
  • Maintain and report on end-to-end claims-handling best practices across all available platforms.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to support claims responses in major incidents.
  • Assist management with reporting on claims and loss prevention practices, when required.
  • Identify and address process or knowledge gaps to reduce legal and financial exposure arising from contractual clauses and operational practices.
  • Provide operational teams with guidance on non-standard situations during pre-carriage, pre-delivery, and post-delivery phases.
  • Appoint, instruct, and manage external lawyers for legal proceedings and major incidents as necessary.
  • Manage in-house retained claims and key customer claims.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Maritime Law, Maritime Legal Studies, or Marine Insurance preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of relevant marine insurance and claims management experience with shipowners, ship managers, P&I Clubs, or their correspondents.
  • Strong knowledge of maritime laws and conventions related to cargo liabilities.
  • Proven ability to work independently with strong communication and supervisory skills.
  • In-depth understanding of the container liner industry is advantageous.
  • Resilient, with a strong sense of urgency and ability to work effectively under demanding timelines.
  • Proficiency in business applications and IT tools such as SAP, Excel, and Microsoft Office.
