Job Description
This position will provide support to the Uranium Processing Facility (UPF) located at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. UPF will be built by 2025 for $6.5 billion and will be the first-of-its-kind complex for enriched uranium operations in support of Y-12 missions. UPF is one of the Department of Energy’s largest investments in Tennessee since the Manhattan Project and one of the National Nuclear Security Administration’s largest construction projects. When complete, UPF will: replace a 70-year-old facility with modern buildings, reduce operational costs and energy consumption, improve worker safety, and provide enriched uranium capabilities well into the future.
Eligibility for this position requires US citizenship; the successful candidate must provide proof of US citizenship in order to obtain badge access to the site. Candidate must complete security questionnaire and successfully clear site access requirements check. All employees are subject to and agree to random drug and alcohol testing as a condition of employment. Must be able to obtain a security clearance, as applicable.
Role Overview:
• Originate and check complex structural engineering deliverables, such as steel and concrete calculations, specifications, material requisitions.
• Reviews and coordinates technical documents with/from other engineering disciplines, procurement, and construction.
• Prepare technical reports related to specific design issues.
• Manage specifically assigned project activities.
• Assist in constructability reviews.
• Support construction by dispositioning field change requests and nonconformance reports.
• Act as a mentor or coach for subordinate engineers and designers.
• Schedule and coordinate off-project review requirements for engineering deliverables.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
• BS in structural/civil engineering from an accredited university or college, and 9+ years progressive related experience.
• Must be a US citizen.
• Must be able to complete and pass a pre-employment drug screen and background check which includes verification of employment and education.
• Must be able to obtain a site security badge for access to the worksite.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Prior experience working in a Nuclear Quality and Safety Environment.
• Ability to obtain U.S. Professional Engineering (PE) license.
• Ability to independently execute the detailed design of complex steel and/or concrete structures.
• Thorough knowledge and application of the AISC Steel Construction Manual, ACI 318, and ASCE 7.
• Proficient in the use of structural analysis software such as SAP 2000, GTSTRUDL, or ANSYS.
• Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Mathcad.
• Thorough knowledge of engineering deliverables, such as drawings, specifications, material requisitions, and construction methods for concrete and steel structures.
• Understands the work processes of other disciplines and departments on projects.
• Ability to express technical issues in a clear and concise manner, both written and verbally.
• Ability to resolve design issues with subordinate suppliers, other engineering disciplines, construction, and the client.
• Excellent listening, oral and written communication, planning, and organizational skills are essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Proficient in the use of Mathcad or similar software.
• Thorough knowledge of the provisions of ACI 349, AISC N690, ASCE 4-98, ASCE 7, and IBC codes.
• Familiar with Bechtel standard programs, such as ME-035, Base Plate II.
• Experience in the structural design of Nuclear and/or DOE facilities.
• Experience with managing discipline software life cycle documentation.
• Necessary skills to present technical subjects with competence and confidence.
• Experience in resolving field problems associated with FCNs, FCRs, NCRs, CDRs, and/or SDDRs.
• Willingness to relocate after assignment completion
