Municipal Pipe Layer Helper
Company: Infracon Group of Companies
Location: Prince Rupert, BC
Type: Full-Time / Project-Based
Wage Range: $27.00 – $33.00 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications
About the Role
The Infracon Group of Companies is seeking motivated, hardworking Pipe Layer Helpers (Civil Construction Laborers) for a municipal sewer and water infrastructure project in Prince Rupert, BC.
We are looking for reliable ground crew members to support our experienced Municipal Pipe Layers and Foremen in the safe, efficient installation of sewer, water, storm, drainage, manholes, and related underground civil infrastructure.
This role is ideal for an entry-level to intermediate civil laborer who wants to learn the pipe laying trade. You will be hands-on everyday—preparing trenches, managing materials up top, shoveling bedding, handling tools, and keeping the job site running smoothly. If you are physically fit, safety-conscious, and eager to learn how to read grade stakes and install municipal utilities, this is the perfect stepping stone to becoming a full pipe layer.
Key Responsibilities
Pipe Installation & Crew Support
- Assist the Pipe Layer (Bottom Man) and Top Man with the installation of sanitary sewer, storm sewer, watermain, and drainage systems.
- Stage, move, and hand down pipe sections, fittings, gaskets, valves, and manhole components to the crew in the trench.
- Prepare pipe joints by cleaning, beveling, and applying lube or glue as directed by the Pipe Layer.
- Safely operate hand tools, power tools, quick-cut saws, rammers, plate tampers, and trash pumps.
- Assist with the assembly and placement of manholes, catch basins, and hydrants.
Trenching, Shoring & Material Handling
- Work safely around trench boxes, shoring systems, excavators, and active roadwork environments.
- Hand-dig and shovel around existing live utilities (gas, power, water, sewer) where heavy machinery cannot operate.
- Shovel, rake, and place pipe bedding, haunching, and backfill materials precisely in the pipe zone.
- Help monitor trench walls, ground water levels, and changing site conditions to ensure the safety of the crew inside the ditch.
- Communicate clearly using hand signals with equipment operators, spotters, and the Pipe Foreman.
Site Organization & Civil Support
- Load, unload, and organize inventory in the material yard and staging areas.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and hazard-free work zone around the excavation.
- Assist with daily setup and tear-down of safety signage, fencing, and tool boxes.
- Support general civil construction tasks as required, including road grading, concrete preparation, and surface restoration.
What You Bring
- Prior experience in civil construction, heavy earthworks, landscaping, or general labor is required.
- Strong physical stamina and the willingness to perform demanding manual labor (shoveling, lifting up to 50 lbs, climbing in/out of trenches) in outdoor environments.
- A strong desire to learn the underground utility trade, including basic grade awareness and pipe handling.
- A safety-first attitude with the ability to follow strict ground-disturbance and confined-space procedures.
- Excellent communication skills and a team-player mentality.
- Punctual, reliable, and willing to travel for project-based work.
Qualifications
- Previous experience as a Construction Laborer or Pipe Helper is preferred.
- Experience working around heavy equipment (excavators, loaders) is highly valued.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and reliable transportation are preferred.
- CSTS, WHMIS, Ground Disturbance, Confined Space Entry, or First Aid certifications are considered strong assets.
- Ability to work outdoors in the varying, high-rainfall weather conditions of Prince Rupert.

- Shift schedules, rotations, overtime, and travel requirements may vary by project.
- Living out allowance (LOA), travel, or other project-specific arrangements may apply depending on location and project terms.
