DEPARTMENT: PROCESSING - SMELTERS

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To monitor and control the safe, effective and efficient operation of a designated section in the metallurgical plant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 or NQF 4 Equivalent is essential
  • Completed all modules and required Process Unit Standards
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Plant Operator is essential
  • Computer Literacy (Microsoft Office) is essential
  • Valid Medical Certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to basic health and safety principles in the workplace
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the Plant Processes
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of monitoring and instrumentation and the ability to take measurements from installed instrumentation
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the relevant terminology used in mining
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the various activities related to the processing of minerals
  • Perform basic fire fighting and basic first aid
  • Prepare, set up and operate process equipment

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Checks staffing figures at start of shift and ensures that all plant activities are functionally covered.
  • Monitors processes during shift and takes corrective action as and when required to do so.
  • Performs administrative functions as may be required.
  • Maintains a reliable reporting and communication system.
  • Implements initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity and reducing operating costs within scope and assists with the implementation thereof to contribute to the achievement of operational objectives.
  • Supports and participates in change management initiatives to drive transformation and optimisation.
  • Builds, supports and maintains healthy diverse internal and external relations and implements remedial actions where required.
  • Provides relevant support to stakeholders to ensure team objectives are achieved.
  • Adheres to safety regulations and mine standards, procedures and practices and reports non-compliance.
  • Participates in regular safety meetings and makes recommendations to ensure overall safety.
