PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To ensure a safe mining practice with regards to strata control through the management of mining layouts and evaluation of ground conditions; and the management of standards and procedures
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science) or NQF 4 equivalent is essential
- Chamber of Mines Strata Control Certificate is essential
- Chamber of Mines Rock Mechanic Certificate is desirable
- Strata Control observer-in-training experience is essential
- Geotechnical Observer experience is desirable
- 2 years' experience as a Strata Control Technician is essential
- 2-4 years mining background production experience is desirable
- Valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Knowledge of basic Strata Control principles is essential
- Must have knowledge of Rock Engineering functions and activities
- Attention to detail, self-disciplined and technical skills are essential
- Communication skills with all levels is considered an advantage
- Good underground observation, report writing and analyzing of data skills
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Coordinate and manage subordinates daily work functions, evaluate their performance and coach them.
- Provide a support function to production personnel during the planning process and the day-to-day running of the mine (Attending to planning, g-sheets, safety, or meetings scheduled by management).
- Monitor ground movement and ground conditions, assess areas reported as having encountered adverse ground conditions and assist the Rock Engineering Officer and Senior Rock Engineering Officer with making recommendations.
- Participate in workplace start-up assessments, assess prevailing ground conditions, check support effectiveness and compliance to standards and recommend required actions prior to commencing work.
- Assist with ensuring the Marula safe mining standards and procedures are implemented and enforced.
- Investigate the causes of rock-related accidents and incidents and recommend remedial action.
- Coach production personnel on strata control hazards, risks, principles and procedures.
- Required to do underground visits on a daily basis to assist in identifying problem areas and deviation from the norm.
- Evaluating data and observations made by himself/herself and sub-ordinates.
- Recommend and quality assure secondary support.
- Installing and analyzing instrumentation data.
- Update plans on the MRM system/working survey plans
