PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To ensure safe mining practice with regards to strata control through the management of mining layouts, evaluation of ground conditions, and enforcement of standards and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

• Grade 12 with Maths and Science (NQF Level 4) is essential
• Strata Control Certificate is essential
• Rock Mechanic Certificate (minimum 3 subjects passed) is essential
• Strata Control Officer experience is essential
• Mining background production is desirable
• Degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering or Geology is desirable

COMPETENCIES:

• Identifies and recommends initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity, and reducing operating cost within scope and assist with the implementation thereof to contribute to the achievement of operational objective.
• Supports and participates in change management initiatives to drive transformation and optimisation.
• Advised management on business improvements initiatives identifies.
• Builds, Supports, and maintains healthy diverse internal and external relations and implements remedial actions where required.
• Provides relevant support to stakeholders to ensure team objective.
• Adheres to safety regulations and mine standards, procedures and practices and reports non-compliance.
• Participates in regular safety meetings and makes recommendations to ensure overall safety.
• Performs regular inspections in area of work and report hazards to ensure environment is safety and hazard free and recommends remedial action where necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Stops fall of ground and reduces seismic related risks
• Monitors ground conditions and assist the Rock Engineering Officer with making recommendations
• Provides a support function to production personnel during the planning process and the day to day running of the mine
• Assists with developing standards and ensuring safe mining standards and procedures are implemented and enforced.
• Manages the subordinates (Junior strata control offices and observers), evaluating their performance on a continuous basis and actively coaches them to enhance their understanding and procedure.
• Coaches the production personnel on strata control principles and procedure.
