PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To achieve the objectives and targets of the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene within the operation and ensure compliance to Mine Health and Safety act.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science) or NQF 4 equivalent is essential
- Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control is essential
- Chamber of Mines Advanced Certificate in Mine Environmental Control is desirable
- Relevant certificate of Competency in Occupational Hygiene or relevant field is desirable
- 3 years' experience in underground mining environment with practical experience in Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene is essential
- Minimum 3 years experiences in a trackless underground mining environment with practical experience in the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene field is essential
COMPETENCIES:
- Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Regulations
- Knowledge and experience in the planning, design and optimisation of underground ventilation
- Knowledge and experience in underground flammable gas management
- Relevant legislation; Policies & Procedures, Risk assessments and system knowledge
- Knowledge and experience in underground fire prevention, detection and suppression management
- Knowledge and experience in managing occupational hygiene programmes and systems
- Knowledge and experience in operational risk assessment
- Knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Regulations
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensures achievement of legal compliance in area of responsibility.
- Ensures maintenance of the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene strategies and system.
- Ensures compliance measurements in terms of Section 11 and 12 of the Mine Health and Safety Act Occupational Health Risk Assessment and Monitoring) and the Environmental Engineering and Occupational
- Hygiene Regulations of the Mine Health and Safety Act pertaining to monitoring and reporting at Business Area level.
- Conducts routine ventilation and occupational hygiene audits, fire risk assessments and risk assessments, inspections, measurements and surveys, and reports findings, recommends appropriate interventions and does follow-ups.
- Assists in short-term ventilation and occupational hygiene planning.
- Provides contribution to the achievement of the objectives and targets of the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Department and those of the business area.
- Assists with management of technical resources and assets.
- Implements initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity and reducing operating costs within scope and assists with the implementation thereof to contribute to the achievement of operational objectives.
- Supports and participates in change management initiatives to drive transformation and optimisation.
