About the job Diesel Mechanic

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To safely fault finding, replace, maintain, and repair components on vehicles/earthmoving equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • An N2 in Mechanical Engineering (NQF Level 4) is essential.
  • Recognised relevant Trade Qualification (Section 26D) OR proof of recognised completed apprenticeship contract (completed by means of effluxion of time) NTC 2 (relevant Trade Theory, specialised courses) (desirable)
  • 2 years experience as a Diesel Mechanic on Forklifts, Telescopic boom handlers, and earth-moving equipment is essential (Manitou, Clark and Bell models would be preferable)
  • Hydraulic experience will be an advantage
  • Experience in a mining environment will be advantageous.
  • A valid medical certificate or be medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate

COMPETENCIES:

  • Understanding of engineering drawings for an engine of vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
  • Understanding of body component drawings for vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
  • Understanding of drawings of vehicles and earthmoving equipment systems.
  • § Understanding of principles of fault finding on vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
  • Understanding of components and the purposes of the components of vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
  • Understanding of the components of vehicles and earthmoving equipment, logbook and where to look to ascertain the type of work required.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Complete Job Cards recording work done and parts replaced.
  • Conduct inspections on damaged/breakdown vehicles and earthmoving equipment.
  • Assess and determine vehicle and earthmoving equipment damage and scope of repairs.
  • Conduct fault finding on vehicles / earthmoving equipment and apply applicable remedy.
  • Inspect vehicles and earthmoving equipment for faults and roadworthiness before handing back to user.
  • Control quality of repair and maintenance processes and the quality of finished work.
  • Plan for maintenance and repair work.
  • Carry out vehicle and earthmoving equipment services.
  • Dismantle, remove, and replace components.
  • Remove, replace, and align body parts.
  • Remove body trim and accessories.
