Job Title: Ventilation Officer

PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

To monitor, evaluate and report on Ventilation, Occupational Hygiene and Environmental conditions and make suitable recommendations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12/NQF Level 4/STD 10 is essential
  • Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control is essential
  • 3 Years Practical Experience in Underground Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene is essential
  • Valid drivers licence (code 08) and own transport would be considered an advantage
  • The successful candidate must have a valid medical certificate or be medically fit to obtain one
  • Computer Literacy is essential

COMPETENCIES:

  • Must have skills to present information in a report format
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant current occupational health and safety legislation
  • Knowledge of basic occupational hygiene principles
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of airborne pollutants and its control measures
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of noise and its control measures
  • Knowledge of the most common harmful gases and vapours
  • Knowledge of airflow calculations and principles of airflow in a ventilation circuit
  • Knowledge and understanding of emergency preparedness and response

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Co-ordinate the activities of ventilation construction and sanitation crews
  • Monitor and control the installation and commissioning of ventilation systems
  • Measure and calculate the performance of main fans
  • Plan, organize and monitor work in own area of responsibility
  • Monitor underground occupational exposure conditions regarding dust control, air, gases and vapour, noise, water, temperature, and illumination
  • Monitor and control ventilation and occupational hygiene sampling, testing and make recommendations for improvement
  • Monitor and manage the sanitation and sterilisation methods in the workplace
  • Monitor ventilation and occupational hygiene engineering controls
  • Monitor environmental conditions and write reports
  • Conduct audits and write reports
  • Compile ventilation and occupational hygiene reports
