  • PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
  • The Group Head: Safety is responsible for co-developing a Group safety strategy, in consultation with the Implats HSE Board committee, for all Implats Group operating units. It includes contractor management and implementation and maintenance of the identified ISO management programmes. This function must establish and maintain inspections and audits, tracking the compliance with the requirements, addressing the shortcomings and reporting on it against the Group strategy.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
  • A NQF level 7 or higher qualification in mining, engineering or health and safety (At least a trade test and / or Blasting Certificate of Competency is required)
  • A Mine Managers Certificate/ Engineering Government Certificate of Competency, MBA or MBL will be a definite advantage
  • Minimum of 10 years senior management experience in mining, engineering or processing with at least five years experience in safety management
  • Sound knowledge of the Mine Health and Safety (MHSA) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHSA) Acts
  • Knowledge of Compensation of Occupational Injury and Diseases Act (COIDA)
  • Sound knowledge on enterprise-wide risk management, ISO Systems and contractor management
  • Sound project management, incident investigation and auditing skills.
  • The candidate must be a team player and demonstrate good leadership with sound business acumen
  • The successful candidate must have advanced statistical analysis and board-level report writing and presentation skills.

  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
  • Develop the annual Group safety business plan
  • Provide guidance on the development of mandatory codes of practice and conduct compliance monitoring on these
  • Provide guidance to the operations on their legal safety structures, ensure compliance to legal frameworks
  • Regularly review updates from Minerals Council of South Africa, Mine Health and Safety Council and stay abreast of industry norms and leading practices
  • Engage with industry bodies, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to stay abreast of and influence safety practices
  • Gather data on key performance indicators, provide insights, address the critical issues
  • Conduct benchmarking exercises against peers and other industries related to safety
  • Create a safe working environment, promote inclusivity and ensure the training and awareness material at the operations are current and effective
  • Guide on the required control measures to be implemented to mitigate critical risks. Review and advise on the risk management strategies
  • Adopt new technology where applicable to track safety performance and give predictions from learnings
  • Lead and manage the performance of employees. Hold direct reports accountable for results
  • Actively engage stakeholders to facilitate a greater understanding of and support for the Implats safety strategy
