PURPOSE OF THE JOB: The Geotechnical Observer is responsible for assisting the Strata Control Officer and other staff with strata control issues on his respective Operational area. The Geotechnical Observer serves a pivotal part in strengthening ground control monitoring and risk mitigation

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12/ NQF Level 4 Is essential
  • Formal Rock Engineering/Geology/Mining Qualification is desirable
  • SCO certificate is desirable
  • Blasting certificate is desirable
  • 2 Years of Experience in Mining Environment is essential
  • Computer literacy (MS Office Package) is essential
  • A valid medical certificate or medically fit in order to obtain such a certificate

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Audit support installation compliance and ensure that relevant standards/recommendations are complied with.
  • Advise on corrective actions on non-compliance.
  • Conduct basic mapping of geological features.
  • Compilation of geological reports and plotting of geological structures on Mine Plans.
  • Prepare and process all underground GPR scans and borehole scoping on a daily basis.
  • Prepare and process graphical and borehole scope images for Strata Control Officer's scrutiny and action on the same day
  • Assist the Strata Control Officer with preparation of the GPR and borehole scoping reports and recommendations.
  • Conduct monthly routine GPR scanning and borehole scoping as required by Strata Control Officers or management.
  • Write GPR and borehole scoping reports and communicate it to the Rock Engineering department and relevant stakeholders.
  • Conduct GPR and borehole scoping planning and communicate it to the Rock Engineering department and relevant stakeholders.
  • Carry the control console for GPR to ensure data integrity during collection.
  • Carry the borehole camera to ensure data integrity during collection.
  • Ensure excavations are scanned as required and that fall of ground (FOG) lights are installed as per standard.
  • Install and monitor underground Rock Mass Monitoring instrumentation.
  • Assist the SCO with TARP RED panel follow up visits.
  • Assist with Rock Engineering projects and testing new support products.
  • Perform quality control on secondary support installations.
  • Plotting of Q-ratings onto the Mine Plans on a daily basis.
  • Plotting of GPR and borehole scans/reference numbers on the Mine Plan on a daily basis.
  • Update the TARP register.
  • Assist with the training of operational personnel on hazard identification in the workplace.
