POSITION DESCRIPTION
This position will be part of the dynamic team based at Smelter reporting to the Senior Production Metallurgist.

JOB TITLE – Refractory Foreman
JOB GRADING – C6
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a nationally recognised Refractory Mason trade certificate, minimum of a National Diploma
- A minimum of eight (8) years' post-apprenticeship experience as a Refractory Artisan, including at least three (3) years in a supervisory role
- Experience in all aspects of smelter refractory maintenance, including hot gas generators, furnaces, converters, ladles, tapholes, launders, and ducts, and knowledge of refractory materials and applications
- Demonstrated experience in refractory brickwork and material installation and repair, failure analysis, hot work in confined spaces, safety management, and campaign life optimisation
- Experience in managing major refractory projects such as furnace, converter, and HGG relines.
- Knowledge of budget control and refractory cost management
- Certification in supervision and SHE management will be an added advantage
- Working knowledge of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 will be an added advantage
- Computer literacy with proficiency in SAP and Microsoft Office will be an added advantage
LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES:
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and supervisory skills
- Effective root cause analysis capability, planning, coordination, and organisational skills
REFRACTORY FOREMAN RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Ensure full compliance with SHE standards applicable to all refractory activities
- Manage and supervise refractory maintenance and masons and contractors, ensuring adherence to quality standards for bricklaying, castable installation, gunning, curing, and testing of refractory materials
- Develop, manage refractory budget and costs, monitor refractory material usage, costs ensure proper handling and storage, maintain effective stock control, and ensure availability of critical spares
- Assess refractory wear mechanisms and recommend appropriate corrective and preventative actions
- Train, mentor, and develop refractory apprentices and junior personnel
