PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To move minor equipment and materials safely using various lifting and rigging techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 /STD 10 NQF 4 is essential
  • Serviceman Certificate is essential
  • 1 year experience as an Engineering Assistant is essential
  • Operate a pendant controlled overhead crane is essential
  • Valid Medical certificate or medically fit to obtain such a certificate

COMPETENCIES:

  • Demonstrate knowledge pertaining to basic health and safety principles in the workplace
  • Demonstrate knowledge of safe working loads
  • Perform basic fire fighting and basic first aid
  • Read, interpret and produce basic engineering drawings
  • Identify, inspect, use, maintain and care for engineering hand tools
  • Select, use and care for engineering measuring equipment
  • Inspect, use and care for manual lifting equipment and tackle
  • Manufacture basic rigging hand tools
  • Perform basic rigging procedures
  • Identify and use steel wire ropes for rigging and fibre ropes

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:

  • Determines the lifting and moving requirements (weight and size of the object).
  • Inspects rigging equipment for any defects before using it for rigging purposes.
  • Splices cables according to required standards (Thimbles)and to prevent ends from fraying.
  • Places and moves a load by utilising rollers.
  • Re-rails rolling stock by means of jacks.
  • Performs pre-use maintenance and inspection on lifting machinery and equipment.
  • Directs the operation of overhead cranes.
  • Lifts, turns and moves loads using manual lifting equipment and tackle.
  • Manoeuvres loads using mechanical lifting equipment.
  • Secures load for transportations.
  • Transfers loads by means of snatching and anchoring.
  • Transports and stores material and equipment.
  • Applies lubrication to steel wire ropes.
  • Performs routine maintenance on: Mills including all its auxiliaries, Compressors, Pumps, Crushers, Conveyors
  • Implements initiatives aimed at eliminating waste, improving productivity and reducing operating costs within scope and assists with the implementation thereof to contribute to the achievement of operational objectives.
  • Supports and participates in change management initiatives to drive transformation and optimisation
  • Builds, supports and maintains healthy diverse internal and external relations and implements remedial actions where required.
  • Adheres to safety regulations and mine standards, procedures and practices and reports non-compliance.
  • Performs regular inspections in area of work and report hazards to ensure environment is safety and hazard free and recommends remedial action where necessary.
