PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
The Group Principal Engineer will provide technical assurance to ensure the safe, compliant, and reliable operation and maintenance of mining and processing electrical systems. This includes, but is not limited to, electrical reticulation networks, substations, power and energy systems, protection systems, winders, ground-handling systems, surface and underground electrical infrastructure, and smelting facilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- NQF Level 7 qualification in Electrical Engineering and Government Certificate of Competency (GCC – Mine and Works).
- Professional Engineer registration and Certified Energy Manager qualifications will be advantageous.
- Minimum of 10 years' experience, with at least 5 years in a senior engineering management role.
- Proven project management experience.
- Broad knowledge of Health Safety and Environmental (HSE) compliance requirements applicable to mining and processing operations.
- Comprehensive knowledge of legislative frameworks applicable to renewable energy and power systems.
- Strong understanding of key electrical infrastructure installations used in mining and processing operations.
- Demonstrated expertise in implementing and managing electrical asset lifecycle strategies to optimise reliability and performance.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and relationship management skills.
- Detail-oriented, self-driven, and results-focused.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide oversight and assurance for the design and upkeep of electrical and renewable energy systems to reduce operational and business risk.
- Deliver specialist electrical engineering consultancy and advisory support across the organisation.
- Coordinate implementation of the Group energy and carbon management strategy, including supply and demand sides projects portfolio.
- Drive strategic roadmaps for adopting emerging technologies to enable operational excellence and digital transformation.
- Conduct technical audits to verify compliance with electrical engineering standards, statutory regulations, and best practices, while promoting innovation throughout operations.
- Implement a structured Asset Integrity Management process to prevent significant electrical system and infrastructure failure events.
- Lead and oversee strategic and tactical turnaround interventions where electrical system performance is below acceptable standards.
- Ensure electrical maintenance strategies deliver on defined availability, reliability, and lifecycle cost performance targets.
- Monitor, analyse, and benchmark performance metrics to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
- Investigate electrical system failures, determine root causes, and implement effective corrective and preventative actions.
- Engage with relevant stakeholders to enhance safety, reliability, and compliance of electrical installations.
- Support organisational transformation, empowerment initiatives, and succession planning processes.
- Conduct technical reviews on capital projects to identify improvement opportunities and carbon reduction potential.
- Deliver monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
- Convene electrical and energy management working group meetings.
- Develop corporate awareness of national and regional energy policies, risks, constraints and plans.
