The Opportunity
A leading Am Law 100 firm is seeking a Patent Agent with an advanced degree in medicinal or organic chemistry to join its Intellectual Property Prosecution team. This position focuses on patent prosecution, freedom-to-operate analysis, and due diligence activities. The role offers flexibility to work from offices in San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, or Washington, DC.

Key Responsibilities

  • Patent Prosecution: Draft, prosecute, and analyze patent applications in various chemical fields, including organic, synthetic, and medicinal chemistry, as well as material science.
  • Invention Analysis: Assess scientific literature, patents, and application documents; conduct in-depth analysis of inventions compared to existing discoveries.
  • Strategic IP Counseling: Collaborate with clients on cutting-edge chemical technologies to procure patent protection and build robust IP portfolios.
  • Drafting & Advocacy: Draft patent applications and responses to office actions, presenting convincing arguments for patent allowances.
  • Research: Conduct comprehensive searches for scientific and patent documents relevant to inventions.
  • Collaboration: Work with a team to critique and refine scientific data, ideas, and reasoning.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • Ph.D. in Organic or Medicinal Chemistry preferred; or
    • Minimum 3 years of post-baccalaureate laboratory research experience.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 2 years of patent prosecution experience.
    • USPTO admission is required.
  • Skills:
    • Strong analytical abilities to present complex scientific concepts clearly.
    • Exceptional organizational skills to manage competing priorities.
    • Proven ability to collaborate effectively in team settings.
