Employment Type: Direct Hire – Full Time
Compensation: $100,000 – $220,000 base salary + performance bonuses
HireNow Staffing is actively recruiting a seasoned, highly skilled Workers Compensation Defense Attorneys to join one of our valued client partners. HireNow Staffing is acting as a direct placement partner for this litigation and defense counsel role within a California workers compensation defense practice.
Position Overview
The Workers Compensation Defense Attorney will represent employers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators in workers compensation matters before the California Workers Compensation Appeals Board (WCAB). The role requires strong knowledge of California workers compensation law and the ability to independently manage claims from initial assignment through resolution.
The position involves litigation responsibilities including hearings, depositions, legal filings, and settlement negotiations while working within a fully digital legal practice environment.
Candidates must demonstrate familiarity with California workers compensation procedures and the ability to manage a high-volume caseload efficiently while maintaining clear communication with clients and claims professionals.
Core Responsibilities

Represent employers, insurance carriers, and third-party administrators in workers compensation defense matters before the WCAB

Manage a full caseload of workers compensation claims from intake through resolution

Attend hearings, conferences, and trials before workers compensation judges
-
Take and defend depositions, including medical depositions when applicable

Draft legal pleadings, motions, and other filings related to workers compensation disputes

Negotiate settlements and develop strategies to resolve claims efficiently

Conduct legal research related to California workers compensation statutes, regulations, and case law
-
Maintain regular communication with adjusters and clients regarding case status and legal strategy

Work collaboratively with legal assistants and internal team members within a remote legal environment
Required Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)
Candidates must meet all of the following requirements to be considered for interview:

Active license with the California State Bar

Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school

Minimum 1.5 years of dedicated California workers compensation defense experience

Demonstrated experience representing employers, insurers, or TPAs within the California workers compensation system

Ability to independently manage a high-volume workers compensation caseload

Experience drafting legal documents, motions, and case filings related to WC matters
-
Comfort working within a remote, paperless legal practice environment

Ability to maintain full-time availability with no schedule modifications

Stable employment history with no pattern of short-term job changes
Candidates without direct experience in California workers compensation defense will not be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications are highly preferred and will strengthen a candidate's profile:

Experience taking doctor depositions related to workers compensation matters

Trial experience as first or second chair in workers compensation hearings

Strong billable hours performance demonstrating productivity and discipline

Experience using dictation software and paperless case management systems

Interest in future leadership or management roles within a growing legal team

Strong client-facing communication skills when working with adjusters and corporate clients
