Journeyman Electrician – Mining Operations

Position Summary

The Journeyman Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, testing, and inspection of electrical systems and equipment supporting underground mining, surface mining, and mineral processing operations. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of production equipment, electrical infrastructure, motor control systems, instrumentation, and power distribution networks.

The successful candidate will possess strong industrial electrical maintenance experience, advanced troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to safety and operational excellence in a mining environment.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair electrical equipment and systems to minimize operational downtime.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on electrical infrastructure and production equipment.
  • Install, maintain, and repair motors, motor control centers (MCCs), switchgear, transformers, breakers, and associated electrical equipment.
  • Test and inspect electrical systems to ensure compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.

Mining & Processing Equipment Support

Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems associated with:

  • Conveyors and material handling systems
  • Crushers and processing equipment
  • Pumps and pumping stations
  • Ventilation systems
  • Hoists and shaft equipment
  • Compressors
  • Mobile mining equipment
  • Process control systems
  • Electrical substations and power distribution systems

Instrumentation & Controls

  • Troubleshoot electrical controls, PLC interfaces, and automated systems.
  • Support maintenance and calibration of instrumentation devices, sensors, and transmitters.
  • Assist with troubleshooting Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and motor control systems.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and operational testing of electrical equipment.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and work practices.
  • Adhere to MSHA regulations and electrical safety requirements.
  • Perform all work in compliance with Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures.
  • Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and job hazard analyses.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete work orders, maintenance records, and inspection documentation accurately and timely.
  • Report equipment deficiencies and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist with inventory management and spare parts identification.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Journeyman Electrician License or equivalent state-recognized certification.
  • Minimum 3 years of industrial electrical maintenance experience.
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Industrial electrical systems
    • Motor controls
    • MCCs
    • Power distribution
    • VFDs
    • Electrical troubleshooting techniques
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical drawings.
  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Mining industry experience.
  • MSHA training or previous mining operations experience.
  • Experience working in:
    • Potash mining
    • Aggregate mining
    • Cement manufacturing
    • Heavy industrial facilities
    • Oil & Gas operations
    • Chemical processing plants
  • Experience with:
    • Allen-Bradley PLC systems
    • Siemens PLC systems
    • SCADA systems
    • Instrumentation and controls
    • High-voltage electrical systems

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work in underground and surface mining environments.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and elevated locations.

  • Frequently lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in varying environmental conditions including heat, cold, dust, noise, and vibration.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-outs as required.
