THE OPPORTUNITY
Since 2005, MDCalc has been an essential part of the clinician's workflow to help achieve better patient outcomes. Actively used by more than 65% of US physicians, MDCalc is the most broadly used medical reference at the point-of-care for clinical decision tools and content, and one of only four references used by >50% of US HCPs. These evidence-based tools and content are used by millions of medical professionals globally support 50+ specialties and cover 200+ patient conditions.
We're seeking a Product Design Lead to optimize the digital experience across our web and mobile platforms. This person will play a key role in shaping our design strategy, championing UI/UX best practices, and building intuitive, user-centered products that help healthcare professionals (HCPs) access critical information quickly and confidently, ultimately improving patient experience and health outcomes. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams in a collaborative, fast-paced environment, with the opportunity to lead high-impact design work in a growing, mission-driven company.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
The responsibilities of this individual include the following, but are not limited to:
Design Strategy
- Own and evolve MDCalcs design strategy across web and mobile experiences.
- Partner with teams cross-functionally to define the product roadmap with a user-first mindset.
- Understand client needs and how to integrate their messaging into MDCalc content balancing client & user impact.
- Build and maintain design process, systems, component libraries, and style guides to maintain brand and design consistency.
User Research & Analysis
- Conduct user research, interviews, and usability testing to inform design decisions.
- Collaborate on problem/opportunity identification and journey mapping.
- Translate user behavior and feedback into actionable design improvements.
- Participate in A/B and multivariate testing.
UX/UI Execution
- Create wireframes, user flows, prototypes, and high-fidelity visuals.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to validate and ship user-centered solutions.
- Validate and evolve user experience metrics over time in collaboration with data scientists.
- Ensure accessibility and performance standards are embedded in design.
- Use design tools such as Figma to create and iterate quickly.
Develop Solutions
- Collaborate with product managers and developers to define user experience requirements.
- Translate requirements into accessible, privacy-compliant, and scalable design solutions.
- Communicate design rationale, provide supporting documentation, and guide implementation.
- Validate final builds to ensure alignment with design intent and sign off before launch.
- Evaluate impact using clear success criteria and use findings to drive iterative improvements.
- Create custom design assets such as icons, illustrations, templates, and interactive elements.
Leadership
- Champion a UX-first mindset across the company.
- Mentor others in design thinking and advocate for UX best practices.
- Help lay the foundation for growing a high-impact design function as the company scales.
YOUR BACKGROUND
- Bachelor's degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field or equivalent professional experience
- 5+ years of experience designing web and mobile applications with a strong focus on user-centered design
- A portfolio that demonstrates end-to-end design thinking, from research to execution to iteration
- Proficient in modern design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite
- Experience with user research, usability testing, and translating insights into actionable design decisions
- Deep understanding of responsive design and platform-specific guidelines for iOS and Android
- Familiarity with A/B and multivariate testing, with a data-driven approach to improving user experience
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain design rationale to cross-functional teams and leadership
- Collaborative mindset, comfortable onboarding quickly, working across teams, and raising the bar for design
- Experience designing tools or interfaces for healthcare professionals (HCPs) is a plus
- Exposure to AI-enabled design workflows or tooling is a bonus
- Thrive in collaborative, fast-paced environments and enjoy turning ambiguity into clarity
