Job Purpose
Were hiring a senior, hands-on engineer to own and support our core business applications (Transport, Fleet, Telematics, Reporting) across the group.
You will be responsible for the day-to-day health, change and improvement of key systems, and other major line-of-business applications. This includes incident resolution, releases and updates, integrations, change requests, documentation, and user training.
You will work closely with stakeholders across Logistics, Operations, Finance and Compliance to make sure our applications are stable, well-used, and continuously improving.
Duties and Responsibilities
Applications Ownership & Support
- Act as the technical owner for core business applications. (TMS/FMS/Mobile Applications etc)
- Provide Level 3 application support across transport, warehouse, and fleet systems; triage incidents, tune SQL, and deliver permanent fixes.
- Maintain systems integrations via REST/SOAP APIs, EDI (XML/JSON) schemas, and flat file interfaces (SFTP/AS2).
- Manage and maintain application configuration, master data and settings in line with business requirements.
- Maintain a clear application catalogue (what systems we have, who uses them, where they are hosted, support model, SLAs, etc.).
Updates, Releases & Change Management
- Plan and coordinate application updates, patches and new releases with vendors and internal teams.
- Own the change request process for applications capture requirements, impact assess, prioritise, and communicate timelines.
- Manage UAT and sign-off with business owners before changes go live.
- Produce release notes and communicate changes to users in a clear, non-technical way.
Automation & Process Improvement
- Be the primary technical contact for application vendors log tickets, chase progress, and ensure accountability.
- Challenge and negotiate with vendors where required to ensure issues are resolved and the product meets business needs.
- Work closely with business stakeholders to scope, document and validate change requests and new functionality.
SQL & Application Data (TMS)
- Use strong SQL (T-SQL) skills to support and troubleshoot the TMS and other SQL-backed applications (queries, reports, views, stored procedures).
- Investigate performance issues, data anomalies and integration errors using SQL.
- Work with the BI/Data teams (where relevant) to align application changes with reporting and analytics requirements.
Integrations & Interfaces
- Understand and support application integrations (APIs, EDI, flat file/SFTP etc.) between core systems such as TMS, TMS, telematics and customer portals.
- Monitor and troubleshoot failed interfaces; work with vendors and internal teams to design robust error-handling and retry processes.
- Maintain technical and process documentation for all integrations so they can be supported and improved over time.
SOPs, Documentation & Training
- Create and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), user guides and support runbooks for all key applications.
- Deliver 1-to-1 and group training for staff on how to use applications effectively, including new starters and when new features are rolled out.
- Ensure documentation is up-to-date, version-controlled and accessible (e.g. SharePoint / internal wiki).
Adoption, Optimisation & Under-Used Modules
- Review and document how applications are currently used across the business modules in use, key processes, gaps and pain points.
- Identify under-utilised modules and features within applications and build business cases for adopting or retiring them.
- Work with departments to simplify and standardise processes, reducing manual workarounds and spreadsheet-based processes.
- Regularly showcase new or under-used features to departments and encourage better use of existing systems before new tools are introduced.
Security, Governance & DR
- Enforce least privilege, RBAC, and secrets management (KMS/SSM Parameter Store/Key Vault) across all applications.
- Apply data governance (naming, cataloguing, classification, retention), access reviews, and audit logging across all operational systems.
- Contribute to backup/restore strategies and DR tests for data platforms and critical applications.
- Assist in the strategic roll out of SSO/MFA across all applications.
Knowledge, skills and experience required
Essential
- Bachelors degree in Computer Science / Information Systems or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years experience in application support/ownership roles in an operational business (transport, logistics, manufacturing or similar environment desirable).
- Strong SQL skills (T-SQL preferred) with experience supporting SQL-backed applications such as a TMS/ERP.
- Experience supporting and integrating business applications (APIs, EDI, flat files, XML/JSON).
- Proven experience managing vendors, leading issues to resolution, and coordinating updates/releases.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills able to translate business problems into application changes.
- Strong documentation skills SOPs, support runbooks, training materials and change records.
Desirable
- Experience with Sage Intacct, and transport/logistics systems.
- Experience with driver/field-based mobile applications.
- Familiarity with ITIL practices (Incident, Problem, Change).
- Exposure to BI/reporting tools (e.g. Power BI, Fabric, QuickSight) and how application data feeds them.
