About the Project:
In our current strategic plan, we are committed to strengthening public education systems to deliver quality foundational learning for all children, reducing learning disparities, and enabling multilingual education (MLE). Equity is not a programme add-on for us; we are heavily invested in building ecosystem capacity, generating evidence, and driving change. The program focuses on: Collaborating with state-level Samagra Shiksha and other government agencies to embed gender-responsive pedagogy into active FLN frameworks. Designing, piloting, and scaling an end-to-end gender-responsive classroom model (Demo-G) across multiple blocks and contexts. Translating classroom-level evidence and field insights into scalable policy inputs, teacher capacity-building modules, and strategic system shifts.
About the Role:
The State Gender Coordinator will serve as the core technical and operational anchor for gender-inclusive and gender-responsive programming in the state's FLN initiatives. Based out of Lucknow, this role involves reviewing educational materials for biases, coordinating across units to embed gender responsiveness into active projects, and leading field-level pilots from conceptualization to execution. The position requires strong program implementation skills, a deep understanding of gender-sensitive pedagogy, and the ability to work in close alignment with government bodies, field teams, and central technical units.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Program Design & Gender-Inclusive Integration: Coordinate and facilitate gender-inclusive programming in state FLN initiatives. Review existing curriculum, teacher guides, and learning materials for gender biases, and develop inclusive guidelines. Collaborate closely with academic, monitoring, and teacher capacity building units at the state level to imbue gender responsiveness into active projects, while providing strategic support to the central team to develop macro-level approaches.
- Government Liasoning & System Strengthening: Maintain strong relationships with the Gender Coordinator at Samagra Shiksha, SCERT, SIEMAT, and district/block education functionaries to ensure system ownership. Partner with government groups to embed gender-sensitive pedagogy inputs into state-level training programs. Redesign training touchpoints to reflect diverse gender identities, activate government capacities in early grades, and liaise with partner organizations to strengthen the regional ecosystem.
- Demonstration Pilot Management (Demo-G): Lead the design, development, and implementation of the gender-responsive classroom pilot (Demo-G) end-to-end, from field execution to scalability. Create annual program plans, budgets, visit schedules, teacher nudge sequences, and academic resource person (ARP) engagement strategies. Develop tools for promoting gender equality and generate evidence for knowledge management and dissemination.
- Capacity Building, Monitoring & Team Support: Design and facilitate gender attitudinal orientation workshops for project staff and government officials at the state, district, and block levels. Supervise and mentor field-based project and block coordinators through structured workplans. Manage data from all field assessments, conduct structured classroom observations with a gender lens, produce written analytical reports, and capture field-level stories of change and human-interest impact testimonials.
Skills & Qualifications Required:
- Education: Master's degree (or equivalent) in Elementary Education, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or other development-related fields. Specialization in Gender Studies is highly preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 4 years of progressively responsible experience in gender-responsive programming in education. Hands-on experience in curriculum review, developing gender-sensitive teaching-learning materials, and managing field implementations is required.
- Core Operations Expertise: Proven ability to manage multi-tier field teams (Project/Block Coordinators), establish workplans, and conduct structured performance reviews. Strong background in planning, budgeting, and establishing review mechanisms.
- Sector Knowledge: Deep understanding of gender-responsive pedagogy, intersectionality in early childhood/primary classrooms, and familiarity with public education systems (Samagra Shiksha, SCERT, DIETs).
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in survey design, qualitative/quantitative data tool development, and data management using Excel or tracking apps. Strong report writing, policy brief drafting, and data analysis abilities. Fluent speaking, reading, and writing proficiency in Hindi and English is mandatory.
- Travel: High level of comfort with extensive travel and on-ground engagement across primary schools and government offices in assigned blocks.
