Design Engineer / Naval Architect

A new ship repair yard is being launched in Kingston, Jamaica, which will provide dry docking services for vessels and a range of maintenance and repair services. The company is looking for candidates for the position of the Design Engineer / Naval Architect who will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient repair and maintenance of ships. This position involves a combination of design and production responsibilities, requiring you to use your engineering expertise to plan, manage, and oversee ship repair projects from conception to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with project managers and planners to develop repair plans and schedules.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including technicians, welders, electricians, and inspectors, to ensure smooth project execution.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to all employees involved.
  • Use AutoCAD software and engineering principles to create detailed repair plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Analyse existing ship structures and systems to identify repair requirements.
  • Propose design modifications and improvements for safety, efficiency, and compliance with regulations.
  • Determine the appropriate materials, coatings, and equipment needed for repairs.
  • Collaborate with procurement teams to source and purchase materials within budget constraints.
  • Implement quality control procedures to ensure repairs meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct inspections and testing to verify the quality of repairs and installations.
  • Ensure that all repair activities adhere to safety protocols and environmental regulations.
  • Stay updated on industry standards and regulations related to ship repairs and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain detailed records of repair projects, including design documents, change orders, and inspection reports.
  • Prepare regular progress reports for management and clients.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in ship repair or marine engineering.
  • English language proficiency.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD software and other relevant engineering tools.
  • Strong knowledge of ship systems, structures, and materials.
  • Excellent project management and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of industry regulations and safety standards.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Attention to detail and a commitment to quality work.
