Responsibilities
- Create and implement a Language Arts curriculum that helps students develop strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills, while introducing them to diverse literature from various backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives.
- Assist 8th-grade students with their transition to high school, including writing recommendation letters.
- Develop and deliver a culturally responsive curriculum for either a middle or high school arts elective or advisory class, catering to students at different levels from grades 6 through 12. This includes designing lesson plans, selecting instructional materials, and preparing the classroom for activities.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues on curriculum development and improving teaching strategies.
- Assess students progress regularly by monitoring their performance, grading assignments, tests, and classwork, and providing constructive feedback to students, parents, and colleagues.
- Communicate consistently with relevant parties (learning support specialists, counselors, principals, and parents) about student progress.
- Establish and enforce positive classroom rules, demonstrating strong classroom management skills.
- Attend school, department, team, and parent meetings.
- Participate in required extracurricular activities, such as Back to School Nights, parent/student conferences, faculty meetings, field trips, and special events.
- Stay up to date with relevant classroom technology and teaching methods, demonstrating flexibility in incorporating new resources into lessons and activities.
- Ensure the health and safety of students at all times.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the school administration.
Required Skills and Experience:
Possess a bachelors degree in English or a related discipline from an accredited institution, along with teaching credentials. A masters degree and teaching certification are preferred.
Have 2-3 years of experience in a lead teaching role, ideally in Language Arts at the middle or high school level.
Exhibit excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Show a strong commitment to professional growth and development as an educator.
Demonstrate a collaborative approach to work, along with the ability to take initiative when needed.
Possess effective classroom management skills and the ability to tailor instruction to meet diverse student needs.
