About the role:

Fyfe is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Project Controls Engineer to support the successful delivery of oil & gas and energy & resources projects. Based in Melbourne, this role places a strong emphasis on cost control, while also providing schedule management support. The successful candidate will work closely with project and engineering teams to provide cost tracking, forecasting, budgeting, and performance analysis across all project phases from feasibility through execution and closeout.

Key Responsibilities:

Cost Control (Primary Focus):

  • Develop, implement, and maintain project cost control systems and processes aligned with company and client standards.
  • Prepare project budgets and cost estimates in collaboration with engineering and commercial teams.
  • Track actual costs, commitments, and forecast expenditures against the approved budget.
  • Perform variance analysis and produce monthly cost reports with commentary for key stakeholders.
  • Monitor contractor and vendor costs, progress claims, and variations.
  • Administer and maintain the change management process including change tracking and cost impact assessments.
  • Support monthly project accruals, cash flow forecasting, and financial reporting cycles.
  • Provide input to project performance reviews and participate in client reporting meetings.

Scheduling & Planning:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining integrated project schedules in Primavera P6 and/or MS Project.
  • Monitor schedule performance, update timelines, and provide input to progress reports.
  • Identify schedule risks and interface with engineering and construction teams to maintain alignment with delivery targets.
  • Coordinate with stakeholders to reflect changes and milestones accurately in the schedule.

Reporting & Analytics:

  • Prepare integrated cost and schedule reports, KPIs, and dashboards for internal and external reporting.
  • Conduct earned value management (EVM) analysis and advise on corrective actions.
  • Ensure data accuracy across systems and provide insights for decision-making.
  • Support project audits and ensure adherence to cost control best practices.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Engineering, Construction Management, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in project controls, with a strong cost control focus.
  • Prior experience working in oil & gas, energy, or resources sectors is essential.
  • Proficient in project cost management tools (Excel, Power BI, SAP, or similar ERP systems).
  • Skilled in Primavera P6 and/or MS Project.
  • Strong knowledge of project lifecycles, change management, and EVM.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
