Position Overview
We are seeking a Senior Managed Services Engineer to serve as a technical leader within our support organization. This role is reserved for an engineer who combines deep technical expertise with exceptional client service skills. You will be responsible for managing the most complex client environments, serving as the escalation point for Tier 2/3 issues, and providing strategic technical guidance to both clients and junior team members. Beyond troubleshooting, you will proactively optimize client environments, implement strategic improvements, and ensure the highest levels of system reliability and performance. This role requires someone who doesn't just solve problems, but anticipates and prevents them.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Escalation & Complex Problem Resolution: Serve as the final internal escalation point for the most challenging technical issues across our client portfolio. Troubleshoot and resolve complex problems involving Microsoft 365/Entra ID, hybrid Azure AD environments, advanced networking (VLANs, VPNs, firewall rules), virtualization (VMware/Hyper-V), and business applications.
- Proactive Environment Management: Conduct scheduled health checks and proactive maintenance for assigned client environments. Analyze system performance data, identify trends, and implement optimizations before issues impact users. Manage patch deployment, firmware updates, and security hardening across client estates.
- Client Relationship & Strategic Advisory: Act as the primary technical contact for key managed services clients. Participate in quarterly business reviews (QBRs) to discuss system performance, recommend improvements, and align IT strategy with business goals. Translate technical concepts into business value for non-technical stakeholders.
- Infrastructure Projects & Migrations: Lead and execute smaller-scale infrastructure projects within managed client environments, such as server upgrades, email migrations, firewall replacements, or backup system enhancements. Ensure seamless integration with existing managed services.
- Documentation & Knowledge Leadership: Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for client environments, including network diagrams, system configurations, and operational procedures. Create and deliver training sessions for junior engineers and contribute significantly to the internal knowledge base.
- Mentorship & Process Improvement: Mentor Tier 1 and Tier 2 engineers, providing guidance on troubleshooting methodology and technical best practices. Identify opportunities to improve internal processes, tools, and service delivery efficiency.
- On-Call Support: Participate in the after-hours on-call rotation to provide emergency support for critical incidents, ensuring our commitment to client uptime is upheld.
Required Qualifications & Skills
- Experience: 5-7 years in a hands-on IT engineering role, with at least 3 years specifically in a Managed Service Provider (MSP) or IT consulting environment.
- Technical Expertise:
- Microsoft Ecosystem Mastery: Expert in Microsoft 365 administration (Exchange Online, SharePoint, Teams), Entra ID (Azure AD) including hybrid configurations, and Intune/Endpoint Manager.
- Infrastructure: Strong experience with Windows Server (2016-2022), Active Directory, Group Policy, and virtualization platforms (VMware vSphere or Hyper-V).
- Networking: Solid understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs) and experience with firewalls (Fortinet, SonicWall, Cisco Meraki).
- Cloud: Working knowledge of Azure IaaS and backup/disaster recovery solutions (Veeam, Datto, Azure Backup).
- Client-Facing Excellence: Proven ability to manage client relationships, set appropriate expectations, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences. A service-oriented mindset is non-negotiable.
- Problem-Solving Methodology: Exceptional analytical and troubleshooting skills with a systematic approach to resolving complex, multi-system issues. Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure during critical incidents.
- Certifications (Strongly Preferred): Microsoft 365 Certified: Administrator Expert (MS-102), CompTIA Network+, VMware Certified Professional (VCP), or equivalent.
- Tools Proficiency: Experience with professional services automation (PSA) and remote monitoring and management (RMM) tools such as ConnectWise, Autotask, Datto RMM, or NinjaRMM.
