About the job Mechanic Assistant
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
Assist qualified Diesel Mechanics in servicing, repairing, maintaining, and inspecting diesel-powered vehicles, equipment, and components to ensure they operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards.
Duties:
- Assist with planned maintenance and breakdown repairs on diesel vehicles, engines, and mechanical components.
- Help disassemble, inspect, clean, assemble, and test vehicle and engine components under the guidance of a qualified Diesel Mechanic.
- Assist in diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults using appropriate diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Support routine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and fluid level inspections.
- Assist with engine, transmission, brake, suspension, steering, cooling, and fuel system repairs.
- Ensure the correct use, handling, and storage of tools, equipment, and workshop materials.
- Assist in maintaining cleanliness and organization of the workshop and work areas.
- Follow safe work practices and comply with all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements.
- Assist with contamination control and ensure components are kept clean during repairs.
- Report defective parts, damaged equipment, and additional repair requirements to the supervising Diesel Mechanic.
- Complete allocated administrative tasks, including service checklists, labour time recording, and workshop documentation.
- Maintain a professional image and provide courteous assistance when interacting with customers and colleagues.
- Follow instructions from the Diesel Mechanic or Workshop Supervisor to ensure work is completed on time and to the required quality standards.
- Assist with emergency breakdown repairs when required.
REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent qualification.
- Diesel Mechanic Trade Certificate (completed or currently registered as an Apprentice/Assistant, where applicable).
