- Type of Employment: Part-Time, Four (4), Four (4) hour clinics per month.
- Period of Performance: Base year, plus Four (4) Option Years.
- Estimate Pay: $20.09 - $25.18 per hour
- Paid Time Off per Year: Up to 40 hours per year, accruing on day one.
- Sick Leave per Year: Up to 56 hours per year, accruing on day one.
- Paid Federal Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Federal Holidays (4-hours per holiday as a Part-Time employee).
Working Hours
The Ophthalmic Technician will normally work Monday through Friday during the Health Services Department's standard clinic hours. The Ophthalmic Technician will not work more than 40 hours a week.
Summary of Duties
- The Ophthalmic Technician will provide ophthalmic technical support services to Adults in Custody (AIC) referred to by the Health Services Department at FCI Fort Dix. Services rendered should be professional in nature and consistent with community standards of care.
- The Ophthalmic Technician will assist optometrists and ophthalmologists in performing ophthalmic examinations, diagnostic testing, and clinical procedures. The technician will also assist in maintaining patient records, preparing examination rooms, and ensuring ophthalmic equipment is properly maintained and operational.
- The Ophthalmic Technician has sole responsibility and discretion for choosing and implementing the manner and method of performing tasks outlined in this Statement of Work (provided all requirements are met in accordance with the policies described below). The Ophthalmic Technician shall adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations during the performance of duties.
Qualifications
- Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Completion of an Ophthalmic Technician, Optometric Technician, Medical Assistant, or related healthcare training program is preferred.
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience assisting with ophthalmic or optometric examinations in a clinical setting.
- Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC) or the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Experience performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing and assisting with eye examinations is preferred.
- Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Attire
- The contractor is expected to wear professional clothing while on duty (scrub uniforms are approved). The attire worn shall also be appropriate for the correctional environment in which the contract employee will be performing.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Reviewing previous patient medical records and other pertinent data for reference during examinations.
- Measuring visual acuity and performing vision testing including color vision, contrast sensitivity, stereopsis, and visual field testing.
- Performing diagnostic ophthalmic testing including tonometry, keratometry, corneal mapping, retinal imaging, and other ophthalmic measurements as required.
- Assisting with corneal and retinal imaging procedures and maintaining ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
- Administering ophthalmic medications and applying eye patches as directed by the provider.
- Practicing aseptic techniques and maintaining infection control procedures while assisting with patient care and ophthalmic procedures.
- Preparing and maintaining examination rooms and ensuring ophthalmic equipment and supplies are properly stocked and operational.
- Assisting the ophthalmologist or optometrist in fitting spectacles and contact lenses and instructing patients on the proper insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses when required.
- Documenting examination findings and test results in the Electronic Medical Records System.
- Scheduling patient appointments and coordinating consultations with other departments or outside medical facilities as needed.
- Receiving and interpreting communications, answering telephones, preparing correspondence, and providing administrative support for the ophthalmology clinic.
- Maintaining inventory of ophthalmic supplies and medications and assisting with ordering and stocking as necessary.
- Performing basic maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and equipment.
- Assisting ophthalmologists during minor surgical procedures while maintaining sterile fields and proper aseptic techniques.
- Other duties as assigned by the Health Services Administrator (HSA) or designee.
