  • Clearance Requirements: National Background Check with Inquiries and Fingerprints, and Drug Screen.
  • Period of Performance: Time of Award up to five (5) years.
  • Type of Employment: Full-time –40 hours per week.
  • Estimated Pay: $41.00 - $46.00 per hour.
  • Pay Holidays: Eleven (11) Paid Holidays.
  • Paid Time Off: Up to 80 hours, which starts accruing on the day of hire.
  • Sick Leave: Up to 56 hours, which starts accruing on the day of hire.

Working Hours
The Dental Hygienist will normally work Monday through Friday (except Federal holidays), between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM, with a 30-minute unpaid lunch period. The Dental Hygienist schedule shall not exceed 40 hours per week. The Health Services Administrator will determine the actual hours of work. Due to the nature of the correctional setting, delays in work performance may occur. Such delays may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, electrical or mechanical problems, or other security matters.

Summary of Duties
The Dental Hygienist will provide dental prophylaxis, preventive oral health services, and periodontal services for Adults in Custody (AIC) referred by the Dental Staff and will assist the Dental Officer with other related duties.

Qualifications

  • Must be certified/licensed as a Dental Hygienist in any state in the United States or United States Territory.
  • Dental radiology certification required.
  • Anesthesia certification is preferred.
  • Three (3) letters of reference from professional peers for verification of credentials.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience is preferred.
  • Must be Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certified either by the American Red Cross (ARC)or the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Correctional Environment experience is preferred.
  • Bilingual oral communication skills and experience in a clinical correctional setting are desirable but not required.

Attire

The Dental Hygienist must always wear appropriate professional attire suitable for the work environment. The Dental Hygienist is prohibited from wearing khaki, green, or yellow clothing of any type, as this is the color of clothing the Adults in Custody (AIC) Population wears.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide scaling and root planning (SRP) procedures, periodontal maintenance, and/or prophylaxis as indicated for the adults in custody who are referred to by the dental staff.
  • Perform comprehensive periodontal charting, probing, and documentation.
  • Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
  • Monitor oral hygiene and periodontal condition on each patient seen for dental prophylaxis.
  • Complete necessary dental x-rays as specified by the dentist.
  • Sterilize instruments used for prophylaxis and other instruments as specified by the dental staff.
  • Perform necessary paperwork related to scheduling patients for dental prophylaxis as directed by the dental staff.
  • Provide thorough individualized oral hygiene instructions for each patient.
  • Provide oral health care services such as suture removal, administration of local anesthetic, and other services (if trained).
  • The physical demands of this position are essentially sedentary in nature; however, prolonged periods of standing, walking, sitting, and bending are required. Frequent mental and physical strain is inherent to duty and responsibility.
  • Occasionally, the Dental Hygienist will be required to lift boxes and equipment.
    • As a general rule, lifting will not exceed 35 pounds.
  • Professional contacts are with inmate patients requiring dental care, contract workers, and other professional and nonprofessional civilians, Public Health Service, and Bureau employees.
