Position Title: Occupational Therapist Hand Therapy

Job Summary

The Occupational Therapist (Hand Therapy) is responsible for delivering patient care through evaluation, treatment, plan of care development, re-evaluation, and discharge planning. The role also includes supervision of assistants and aides, clear documentation, and maintaining strong communication with patients, physicians, and third-party payers. The therapist will also be involved in case management, clinical education, and enhancing client relations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and treat patients in accordance with AOTA standards and physician orders.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans including goals, frequency, and duration.
  • Supervise and delegate appropriate care to assistants and aides per state guidelines.
  • Modify patient programs as needed and document changes.
  • Maintain timely and compliant documentation for evaluations, progress notes, and discharge summaries.
  • Communicate patient progress and care plans with referring physicians, insurers, and case managers.
  • Fabricate custom splints and orthotics.
  • Participate in quality assurance, clinical education, and community outreach efforts.
  • Assist in equipment maintenance and workplace safety protocols.
  • Follow all company policies and Medicare compliance requirements.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift up to 50 lbs. independently using proper biomechanical techniques.
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching.
  • Sufficient vision, hearing, and fine motor skills to perform therapy duties and documentation.
  • Ability to operate therapy equipment and push/pull wheeled equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program (ACOTE-approved).
  • Licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of California (or ability to obtain).
  • Competency in advanced practices including Hand Therapy and Physical Agent Modalities, demonstrated through post-professional education and training in:
    • Upper extremity anatomy and pathology
    • Connective tissue physiology and healing
    • Biomechanics and kinesiology
    • Thermotherapy and electrotherapy
    • Surgical procedures and rehabilitation protocols
  • Supervision eligibility if completing required training under a qualified provider.
