Position Overview:

This company is seeking a detail-oriented and strategic Director of Finance to lead financial modeling, portfolio analysis, and decision-support processes for renewable energy projects. The role requires a blend of financial expertise, process improvement, and strong organizational skills to drive effective decision-making across both early-stage and late-stage project development.

The Director of Finance will be responsible for financial modeling, enhancing modeling efficiency, and developing frameworks to stage-gate investments, prioritize high-value projects, and support critical negotiations. Additionally, the role involves managing a portfolio of 60+ projects, ensuring consistency, accuracy, and strategic insight.

Key Responsibilities:

Financial Modeling & Analysis

  • Develop and maintain financial models for both early-stage and late-stage project development, balancing efficiency with necessary detail.

  • Implement scenario management tools to evaluate sensitivity analyses and create decision frameworks for prioritizing investments.

  • Streamline inputs across models to ensure simplicity and usability, while retaining critical details.

  • Bridge version control and systematic tracking of inputs, assumptions, and updates to enable clear audit trails and reconciliation.

  • Manage a portfolio/database of 60+ projects and models, tracking key sensitivities and updating assumptions in response to market changes.

Strategic Decision-Making Support

  • Establish and manage a stage-gating process for early-stage project evaluation using approximate inputs to guide investment decisions.

  • Conduct detailed financial analyses for late-stage projects, supporting negotiations and maximizing development fees.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze market trends, regulatory changes, and other factors impacting project feasibility.

  • Develop and implement a structured framework for tracking and analyzing project financials across multiple markets, ensuring accurate decision-making.

Process Improvement

  • Enhance tools and frameworks to manage large portfolios, enabling rapid updates and scenario analysis for 50+ projects simultaneously.

  • Integrate external stakeholder models and tools (e.g., APIs, third-party models) while ensuring internal models remain functional and accurate.

  • Simplify complex processes by focusing on key inputs (e.g., interconnect costs, property taxes, yield estimates) that drive decision-making.

  • Develop a structured data management approach for financial modeling, ensuring historical records of assumptions and changes are well-documented.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Own and manage all financial modeling processes to ensure accuracy, consistency, and alignment with company objectives.

  • Train and support team members in understanding and using models, providing clear documentation and process guides.

  • Collaborate with developers, brokers, and external stakeholders to address project-specific needs and incorporate feedback effectively.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelors degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field (advanced degree, MBA, or CFA preferred).

  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in financial modeling, preferably within renewable energy or infrastructure development.

  • Skills:

    • Expertise in Excel-based modeling, including scenario management, macros, and large portfolio analysis.

    • Familiarity with NY and IL distributed generation (DG) markets, market structure, and incentives.

    • Strong understanding of renewable energy project economics, including tax incentives, financing structures, and regulatory frameworks.

    • Proven ability to simplify complex financial processes and create user-friendly tools.

    • Exceptional attention to detail and a commitment to thorough review and validation of work.

    • Effective communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate technical data into actionable insights.

    • Familiarity with version control systems and systematic input tracking.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with third-party financial tools or APIs for project valuation.

  • Strong analytical mindset with a focus on risk assessment and mitigation strategies.

  • Understanding of interconnection, permitting, and regulatory considerations specific to renewable energy.
