About Olson Construction Services

Olson Construction Services is a growing $10 million Texas utility construction and service business with a close-knit, relationship-driven culture. The company values integrity, stewardship, pride in completed work, teamwork, respect, transparency, and ownership.

As the company continues to grow, Olson is seeking an experienced operational leader who can provide seasoned guidance without the need for a full-time COO. This engagement is focused on strengthening the company's operational foundation, developing leadership, and building scalable systems while preserving the culture that has contributed to its success.

About the Role

As Fractional Chief Operating Officer (COO), you will partner directly with the CEO and leadership team to provide experienced operational guidance to a growing construction and service business.

The objective is to mentor leadership, install structure and standard operating procedures, strengthen field-to-office execution, and help the company scale without learning lessons the hard way.

The engagement may involve up to 20 hours per week initially, tapering to approximately 10–12 hours per week as systems and operating rhythms become established.

Key Responsibilities

  • Mentor leadership by providing seasoned operational pattern recognition and practical guidance.
  • Diagnose and address field-to-office communication and handoff gaps.
  • Build and implement SOPs, operating rhythms, accountability structures, and reporting processes.
  • Improve work-order and service-ticket discipline, including photo documentation.
  • Clarify organizational roles and responsibilities to reduce key-person dependency.
  • Improve visibility into completed work, revenue capture, and margins.
  • Develop scalable operating systems while preserving the company's existing culture and values.
  • Identify and anticipate growth-stage operational issues before they become significant problems.
  • Strengthen coordination and execution between field operations and office leadership.
  • Help leadership establish processes that support sustainable growth.
  • Provide executive-level mentorship and practical operational support as the company evolves.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of relevant operations leadership experience.
  • Prior experience as a COO, VP of Operations, General Manager, or similar senior operational leader.
  • Experience in water/utility, underground construction, field service, HVAC/plumbing, or an adjacent service operation.
  • Experience scaling owner-led or small-to-medium-sized businesses in the $8 million–$15 million range.
  • Hands-on experience developing SOPs, processes, and organizational structures.
  • Demonstrated experience with organizational design and operational improvement.
  • Strong executive mentorship and leadership capabilities.
  • Practical, hands-on approach to identifying operational gaps and implementing solutions.
  • Ability to provide seasoned guidance in a fractional capacity.
  • Please provide a resume and expected bill rate.
