About the job Machine Operator
The Grinder Machine Operator is responsible for using powered hand tools and grinding room equipment to buff and/or grind sheet metal parts to prepare them for plating or painting. This role includes removing burrs from parts as assigned. Additionally, the Grinder machine operator may assist other team members on high-priority jobs or be temporarily reassigned to other duties within the fabrication department. Collaboration with the Manager is required to determine job priorities and facilitate the efficient movement of product through the production floor. The incumbent is also responsible for adhering to company policies and procedures to ensure quality standards and customer part specifications are met.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Use powered hand tools and grinding equipment to buff and grind sheet metal parts.
- Remove scratches, laminated metal, excess weld material, burrs, and other surface imperfections.
- Select the appropriate grade of abrasive (belt, wheel, or disk) based on specifications, material condition, and knowledge of abrasives, and attach it to the grinder.
- Replace worn abrasive disks, wheels, and belts as necessary.
- Polish ground areas with a finer abrasive to produce a smooth, unmarred surface.
- Examine and feel the surfaces of sheet metal parts for defects.
- Analyze engineering drawings, blueprints, specifications, sketches, work orders, and material safety data sheets to plan grinding and polishing operations.
- Inspect workpieces for defects and measure components with straightedges or templates to ensure they conform to specifications.
- Prepare all material surfaces by ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter prior to grinding.
- Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the sheet metal grinding/polishing trade (e.g., belt sander, timesaver).
- Operate safety equipment and adhere to safe work habits to maintain a safe and clean working environment in accordance with company policies and state and federal regulations.
