The Senior Manager, Energy Infrastructure oversees Earthworks’ campaigns to defend frontline communities from the harms of oil, gas, and petrochemical development, such as export terminals, pipelines, and plastics plants, with a geographic focus on the Gulf South and Appalachia. The Senior Manager supervises our team of campaigners, who work in close partnership with local grassroots organizations to advance environmental and climate justice. The role is situated within Earthworks’ Energy Program, reporting to the Energy Program Director.

Core responsibilities:

1) Management:

  1. Directly supervise up to 5 staff members working to slow and stop the expansion of oil, gas, and petrochemical infrastructure.

  2. Assist direct reports with prioritization of strategies in the annual plan in support of community partners, agreed policy and corporate accountability objectives, and support to the team to have a sustainable work life balance.

  3. Ensure that Earthworks’ organizational policies are followed and that the team members are contributing to improvements in organizational health.

  4. Collaborate with other managers within the Energy Program to assist in team leadership.

  5. In collaboration with other budget managers, support budget management for Earthworks’ infrastructure and petrochemicals work, and support the overall financial health of the energy team.

2) Strategy:

  1. Develop and execute strategies for Earthworks’ efforts to stop oil and gas infrastructure and petrochemical expansion, in collaboration with the wider Energy team.

  2. Support, inform, and assist communities facing infrastructure expansion and adverse impacts from existing infrastructure.

  3. Work with communities, frontline partners, and other NGOs to plan, implement and evaluate strategies.

  4. Maintain and build relationships with other environmental and advocacy groups, state and federal agency officials, the media, and potential allies including expanding the diversity of our partnerships.

  5. Foster linkages between the efforts of communities and regional groups to national efforts.

  6. Research and assist with the creation of strategic materials and updates for use in communications via the Earthworks website, online advocacy community, and grassroots advocacy networks.

  7. Respond to opportunities as they arise and maintain Earthworks’ strategic position in a dynamic, evolving external environment.

  8. Collaborate with the rest of the Energy team and staff to develop the annual workplan and periodically update Earthworks’ strategic plan, providing input including areas beyond the Energy team.

3) Policy and Corporate Accountability:

  1. Work to ensure that community voices are heard in local, state, and federal policy debates.

  2. Collaborate with the Policy Team and the rest of the Energy team to support Earthworks’ federal and state policy objectives.

  3. Within the legal boundaries as a 501c(3) organization, lobby decision makers on behalf of our strategies.

  4. Collaborate with other national corporate accountability efforts to develop strategies on climate and other oil, gas, and petrochemical pollution efforts and help position Earthworks’ priorities in global corporate accountability efforts.

4) Fundraising:

  1. In collaboration with the Philanthropy team, relevant team members, and the Energy Program Director, assist with raising funds to support the Energy Program and Earthworks as a whole.

  2. As designated, act as point of contact for foundations and major donors. Provide expertise or support to team members as needed.

  3. Develop proposal and report language using Earthworks’ workplans as sources.

  4. Participate in maintaining Earthworks’ fundraising materials and informational systems.

5) Communications:

  1. Ensure that Earthworks’ objectives are communicated consistently and effectively to the public, and support Earthworks’ organizational communications, in collaboration with Communications team.

  2. Act as a spokesperson for Earthworks’ Energy Program as needed and support the development of team talking points and key messages.

  3. Maintain a working knowledge of major media outlets, media tools, online tools, social media tools, and an adaptability to the rapidly changing media environment.

  4. Strive to advance Earthworks’ messages in media and social media effectively and in a timely manner.

  5. Assist and advise other team members as needed and as available with their communications work.

6) General:

  1. Follow Earthworks’ policies and agreements and otherwise support a healthy internal working environment.

  2. Ensure effective team communication via meetings, Energy team engagement in staff meetings, board meetings (as appropriate), use of the team listserv, and other tools for communication.

  3. Support Earthworks’ continued work to advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals and other organizational objectives.

Required Experience and Qualifications

  • At least 7-10 years experience running advocacy campaigns;

  • At least 3-5 years experience managing campaigners and/or field organizers;

  • Experience in conducting field-based organizing and engaging communities;

  • Excellent project management skills, including timely follow-through and demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of organization and attention to detail;

  • Demonstrated experience with offline and online organizing and campaigning tactics, as well as digital campaigning tactics;

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues on communications, digital organizing, and community relationship building;

  • Commitment and experience working with frontline communities and working towards racial justice;

  • Demonstrated understanding of grassroots organizing, movement building, and tactical escalation;

  • Experience with management of contractors and volunteers to achieve project objectives;

  • Ability to work both on one’s own and under direction as part of a project team;

  • Ability to travel as needed.

Preferred Experience and Qualifications

  • Campaign experience in some or all of the following areas: climate change, petrochemical production, human rights, energy policy, specific fossil fuel sectors, finance, corporate social responsibility;

  • Demonstrated experience managing or facilitating advocacy coalitions;

  • Demonstrated experience with non-profit fundraising.

Location, Travel, and COVID-19

Location for this position is remote in the United States, with a preference for candidates based in Texas, Louisiana, or Pennsylvania.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $100,000-$110,000 annually, depending on experience. Earthworks provides full-time staff with a competitive package of benefits, including employer-paid medical, vision, dental, life, and disability insurance. Additionally, Earthworks offers unlimited paid leave, paid parental leave, and a 403(b) retirement plan (with a 5% match after one year of employment). After five years of employment, staff are eligible for a 12 week, fully paid sabbatical.

Bargaining Unit Status

Earthworks is a union workplace; our employees are represented by Earthworkers Unite/ Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). This position is excluded from the bargaining unit.
