Key Responsibilities:

  • Harvest Tracking and Documentation:
    Accurately track, document, and report the following:
    • Crop harvests and yields
    • Plant waste and compost materials
    • Seedlings, transplanting schedules, and plant growth progress
    • Fish weight and growth in aquaponic systems
    • Quantity of food given to fish
    • Fish tank waters oxygen levels, pH balance, and general health
  • Daily Maintenance:
    • Open and close the Greenhouse daily
    • Water crops twice a day
    • Feed fish twice a day
    • Maintain and clean the hydroponic towers and aquaponic tanks
    • Clean and organize the greenhouse and garden areas
    • Report and maintain the pH balance of the hydroponic systems
    • Maintain and grow seeds in the hydroponic tank
    • Manage the growth of crops on the aquaponic tank
  • Aquaponic and Hydroponic Systems Management:
    • Ensure proper fish health and growth by monitoring the food quantity and water quality in the aquaponic system.
    • Manage the planting, growing, and transplanting of crops in both systems weekly.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Assist with planning and leading Urban Gardener Gathering events twice a month, engaging with community members and educating them on sustainable gardening practices.
    • Lead urban garden tours, offering educational and inspiring insights into urban agriculture.
  • Reporting and Checklist Completion:
    • Complete and maintain a daily checklist of tasks, ensuring that all systems are running smoothly and efficiently.
    • Provide regular reports to supervisors on garden, greenhouse, and aquaponic/hydroponic system performance and growth.
  • Event Support:
    Assist with organizing and facilitating workshops, events, and community outreach related to urban agriculture and food sustainability.

- Experience working with children grades PK-12 in a formal or informal setting.
- Classroom behavior management skills.
- Experience planning and organizing activities for children.
- Knowledge of horticulture/agriculture through either formal or informal experiences.
- Cooking skills in the home and/or professional setting.
- Strong cultural competency skills and familiarity with trauma-informed care methods.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and simultaneously supervise a variety of tasks.
- Ability to stand, walk, stoop, reach, and bend.
- Mobility of arms to reach.
- Dexterity of hands to grasp and manipulate large and small objects.
- Ability to lift, push, and/or pull objects that may weigh approximately 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in outdoor weather conditions, including full sun and high temperatures.
- Upon acceptance of position, ability to pass a complete background check.

Working Hours

HOURS: 20 hours weekly, year-round
March - August
- On Site: Monday-Friday and when youth are on site: approximately 9:00 am - 12:00 pm
- On Site: Wednesdays: approximately 2:45 pm - 5:45 pm (at least two Wednesdays per month)
- On Site: Saturdays approximately 9:00 am 12:00 pm (at least two Saturdays per month)
- Additional hours on site, as needed and with flexibility to balance personal and organizational needs; additional office hours from home.
September - February
- On Site: Tuesdays and Thursdays when youth are on site: approximately 2:45 pm - 5:45 pm
- On Site: Wednesdays: approximately 2:45 pm - 5:45 pm (at least two Wednesdays per month)
- On Site: Saturdays approximately 9:00 am 12:00 pm (at least two Saturdays per month)
- Additional hours on site, as needed and with flexibility to balance personal and organizational needs; additional office hours from home.
