Job Openings AIR SEPARATION UNIT SPECIALIST ENGINEER - MECHANICAL

About the job AIR SEPARATION UNIT SPECIALIST ENGINEER - MECHANICAL

To provide specialist mechanical engineering expertise for Air Separation Units (ASU) and associated industrial gas facilities in the Middle East. The role supports FEED, Detailed Engineering, EPC, PMC, and brownfield projects, ensuring compliance with international standards, regional regulations, and client specifications typical of oil & gas, petrochemical, steel, mining, and industrial gas sectors.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead and execute mechanical engineering activities for ASU plants, including air compression, purification, cold box, cryogenic distillation, storage, and product distribution systems.
  • Develop and review mechanical design deliverables such as equipment layouts, plot plans, piping layouts, stress analysis inputs, equipment datasheets, and material specifications.
  • Prepare and check datasheets and specifications for static and rotating equipment including air compressors, expanders, cryogenic pumps, vaporizers, heat exchangers, pressure vessels, columns, tanks, and cold box internals.
  • Ensure mechanical designs are suitable for cryogenic service, oxygen service, and low-temperature operating conditions.
  • Review piping material specifications, line classes, insulation systems, supports, and expansion philosophies for cryogenic and ambient services.
  • Perform or review piping stress analysis for cold box interconnecting piping, cryogenic transfer lines, and large bore process piping.
  • Ensure compliance with ASME, API, ASTM, ISO, EN, MSS, NACE, and Middle East client standards (Saudi Aramco, ADNOC, PDO, QP, SABIC, Maaden).
  • Participate in HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, LOPA, and QRA studies, providing mechanical discipline inputs and safeguards.
  • Review vendor and licensor documentation from industrial gas licensors.
  • Conduct technical bid evaluations, vendor clarifications, and technical alignment meetings.
  • Coordinate with OEMs for compressors, expanders, cryogenic pumps, cold boxes, and packaged units.
  • Review mechanical interfaces with electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
  • Support layout optimization, maintainability, accessibility, and constructability reviews.
  • Participate in FAT, mechanical completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, and performance testing activities.
  • Support construction activities including inspection, site queries, and technical problem resolution.
  • Provide troubleshooting support for equipment failures, vibration issues, leakage, thermal contraction issues, and plant reliability improvements.
  • Support debottlenecking, revamp, and brownfield modifications in operating ASU plants.
  • Ensure mechanical deliverables meet project schedules, quality requirements, and client milestones.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
  • 8–15 years of experience in mechanical engineering, with at least 5 years on ASU or industrial gas projects.
  • Strong experience working on Middle East EPC / PMC projects.
  • Hands-on experience with rotating equipment (compressors, expanders, cryogenic pumps) and static equipment used in ASU plants.
  • Strong understanding of cryogenic systems, low-temperature materials, oxygen service cleanliness requirements, and thermal stress behavior.
  • Experience with piping engineering, stress analysis, and support design for cryogenic systems.
  • Familiarity with ASU licensors and industrial gas technology providers.
  • Knowledge of Middle East project execution practices and documentation workflows.
  • Experience with brownfield modifications and live plant tie-ins is highly desirable.
  • Willing to work at remote project sites under Middle East conditions.
  • Knowledge of site safety practices, work permits, lifting studies, and construction norms are an advantage.
  • Previous experience on projects in Saudi Arabia or UAE.
  • Familiarity with ADNOC standards and other regional authority requirements.
  • Exposure to reliability engineering, equipment condition monitoring, or digital maintenance systems is an added advantage.
