About the job PROCESS SAFETY ENGINEER
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Process Safety Engineer to join our team in Abu Dhabi, supporting the design of a critical onshore oil and gas project in the Middle East. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the engineering sector, particularly in oil and gas projects, with a strong emphasis on Detailed Engineering and process safety management.
The Process Safety Engineer will be responsible for ensuring that all aspects of process safety are integrated into the design and operation of the project, including risk analysis, hazard identification, and compliance with industry standards and regulations. The role requires close collaboration with cross-functional teams to deliver a safe and efficient design for the project, while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead the development and implementation of process safety strategies and ensure they are embedded into the Detailed Engineering design for the project.
- Conduct comprehensive hazard identification studies (HAZID, HAZOP, etc.) and risk assessments for process systems and equipment.
- Provide technical expertise in the development of safety reports, safety case studies, and safety performance analysis to support the project design.
- Collaborate with design teams to ensure process safety is considered in all stages of design, from conceptual to detailed engineering.
- Review and approve safety systems, including relief systems, fire and gas detection, shutdown systems, and emergency response plans.
- Ensure compliance with local, national, and international safety regulations, industry codes, and standards (e.g., OSHA, NFPA, ISO, IEC, and API standards).
- Review and validate the safety integrity levels (SIL) for critical control systems and recommend necessary design modifications.
- Conduct safety reviews of project deliverables, including P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and safety-related documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and project team members on process safety-related matters.
- Work with project management to ensure adherence to timelines, budgets, and safety milestones.
- Collaborate with clients, vendors, and third-party contractors to align on safety specifications and deliverables.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of developments in process safety management and engineering best practices.
KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, or related field. A Masters degree or relevant certifications (e.g., CSP, CFSE) is a plus.
- A minimum of 8-10 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, with significant experience in process safety engineering and detailed engineering design.
- Strong knowledge and practical experience with HAZOP, FMEA, Bow-Tie Analysis, and other process safety methodologies.
- Extensive experience with safety instrumented systems (SIS), fire and gas detection systems, and safety relief systems.
- Solid understanding of relevant international standards and local regulations for process safety (e.g., API, IEC, NFPA, ISO).
- Proficiency in the use of process safety software tools and engineering design tools (e.g., P&ID, FLACS, Aspen HYSYS).
- Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts to multidisciplinary teams and clients.
- Proven ability to lead and collaborate with diverse teams in a multicultural work environment.
- Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Strong attention to detail, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Experience in onshore oil and gas projects in the Middle East region is highly preferred.
- Knowledge of Arabic language is a plus but not required.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and participate in site visits or inspections as necessary.
