Product Engineer

Build products that help power the energy transition

We're working with a fast-growing energy tech startup in Ghent that is building software to manage the rapidly growing number of distributed energy devices across Europe.

Solar panels, home batteries, EVs and heat pumps are changing the way energy is produced and consumed. But coordinating millions of these devices creates an entirely new challenge for energy suppliers and grid operators.

The company is building orchestration software that connects these assets into one intelligent system, helping energy companies reduce costs, balance supply and demand, and make renewable energy infrastructure work at scale.

They are now looking for a Product Engineer who wants to do much more than simply execute tickets.

The role

This is a hands-on engineering role sitting directly between product, customers and technology.

You'll own problems from beginning to end: understand what customers actually need, decide what should be built, design the solution, build it, ship it and improve it based on real-world usage.

Rather than receiving specifications from a product manager, you'll help determine the specification yourself.

You'll work closely with the founders and customers and will have significant autonomy over both what gets built and how it gets built.

The company works AI-first and actively uses AI and agentic development tools to increase engineering leverage. The challenge is therefore increasingly not simply writing code, but exercising good judgment: identifying the right problem, designing the right solution and knowing when something is ready to ship.

What you'll work on

You will:

• Own product initiatives from customer conversation through design, development, launch and iteration.
• Work directly with customers and become a trusted technical point of contact for selected accounts.
• Translate real customer problems into scalable product features.
• Challenge requirements rather than simply implementing them.
• Make pragmatic decisions around scope, technical complexity and customer impact.
• Build and maintain reliable real-time systems used within critical energy infrastructure.
• Identify repetitive or manual work and automate it wherever possible.
• Use AI and modern development tooling extensively throughout the engineering process.
• Contribute to architecture, APIs, integrations and the broader technical direction of the platform.

What we're looking for

You're first and foremost a strong software engineer, but you naturally think beyond the code.

You enjoy understanding why something should be built, not just how to build it.

Ideally, you bring:

• Strong software engineering fundamentals and a solid computer science background or equivalent experience.
• Experience building and shipping real software products.
• A high level of ownership and comfort working independently.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, APIs and data integrations.
• Experience with modern backend and/or full-stack development.
• Strong communication skills and confidence working directly with customers.
• A product mindset: you question assumptions, identify the real problem and care about user outcomes.
• Curiosity around AI-assisted development and agentic tooling.
• Excellent written and spoken English.

The current stack includes Python, TypeScript and SQL, although the team is deliberately stack-agnostic when hiring. Strong engineering fundamentals in another modern language are highly transferable.

There is no rigid years-of-experience requirement. The team is primarily looking for strong mid-level to senior engineers, but exceptionally ambitious earlier-career engineers who can demonstrate significant ownership and technical ability are also encouraged to apply.

Location

You should be based in Europe and able to work regularly from the company's headquarters in Ghent, Belgium.
