What Will You Do?
As a Data Engineer, you will work directly with clients to design and modernise their data environments, building robust data pipeline architecture and analytics solutions. You'll support our Sales team through pre-sales activities and Proof of Concepts (POCs), while assembling complex data sets that meet business requirements and drive actionable insights.
This role combines hands-on technical delivery with client stakeholder management, requiring you to deliver billable client engagements while progressively building the consulting, technical and relationship management skills needed to take ownership of projects and client outcomes.
Responsibility and Accountability
- Working closely with the Engagement Lead, the Data Engineer is responsible for delivering project outcomes, executing agreed project scope and ensuring client objectives are achieved.
- Engage with clients to conceptualise data solutions.
- Modernise existing data environments.
- Assist the Sales team with pre-sales activities and Proof of Concepts (POCs).
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to junior consultants, while supporting intermediate consultants where appropriate.
- Create and maintain optimal data pipeline architecture.
- Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional and non-functional business requirements.
- Identify, design and implement internal process improvements, including automating manual processes, optimising data delivery and redesigning infrastructure for greater scalability.
- Build the infrastructure required for the optimal extraction, transformation and loading (ETL) of data from a wide variety of data sources using Microsoft technologies.
- Build analytics tools that utilise data pipelines to provide actionable insights into customer acquisition, operational efficiency and other key business performance metrics.
- Work with stakeholders, including the Executive, Product, Data and Design teams, to resolve data-related technical issues and support their data infrastructure needs.
- Work with data and analytics experts to enhance the functionality and capability of our data systems.
- Participate in technical reviews and quality assurance activities.
- Assist with technical training and knowledge transfer for consultants and clients.
- Contribute to the technical development of junior consultants through mentoring and knowledge sharing.
- Contribute to and progressively lead technical blogs, forums and/or workshops.
- Assist the Support Desk where applicable.
- Balance team support responsibilities with billable work, depending on capacity and utilisation.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the responsibilities of the role, as requested by management.
What skills and experience would be ideal?
- Experience building and maintaining data pipeline architecture and ETL/ELT processes.
- Experience with modern data platform technologies such as Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Snowflake or similar modern data platforms.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new technologies quickly and adapt in a fast-paced consulting environment.
- Strong SQL skills and experience assembling large, complex data sets.
- Experience modernising and migrating legacy data environments to cloud platforms.
- Ability to design and implement process improvements, automation and scalable infrastructure.
- Experience building analytics tools that deliver actionable business insights.
- Exposure to client-facing consulting, including solution conceptualisation and requirements gathering.
- Exposure to pre-sales activities and Proof of Concept (POC) development.
- Ability to provide technical assistance and guidance to team members, including junior consultants.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills across technical and executive audiences.
- Experience participating in technical reviews and quality assurance activities.
- Ability to deliver technical training and knowledge transfer sessions to colleagues and clients.
- Commitment to knowledge sharing through technical blogs, forums, workshops or other learning initiatives.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Relevant certifications (e.g. Microsoft Azure Data Engineer Associate) are desirable.
