Position Details:

  • Job Title: Heavy Diesel Mechanic
  • Location: Blacktown, NSW
  • Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
  • Salary: $40 to $55 per hour, flat rate, with opportunities for overtime.
  • Work Hours: 38 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with occasional overtime as needed
  • Superannuation: as per Australian standards

Job Duties:

As a Heavy Diesel Mechanic, you will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including but not limited to:

  • Diagnosing and Troubleshooting: Utilise diagnostic tools and equipment to accurately identify mechanical issues in heavy diesel trucks and trailers, including engine, transmission, brake, and suspension systems.
  • Servicing and Maintenance: Perform routine preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, fluid checks, and general inspections of key components like engines, transmissions, braking systems, and electrical systems.
  • Major Repairs: Conduct extensive repairs on engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, brakes, air conditioning systems, and hydraulic components. This includes the disassembly, repair, and reassembly of complex systems.
  • Float Trailer Specialisation: Diagnose and repair issues specific to float trailers, including axle repairs, hydraulic system maintenance, and load-bearing capacity checks.
  • Brake System Repairs: Perform detailed brake inspections, adjustments, and repairs on both air brake and hydraulic brake systems, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety standards.
  • Electrical Systems: Diagnose and repair electrical faults, including wiring, alternators, starters, batteries, and lighting systems, using diagnostic equipment and electrical schematics.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Perform minor welding and fabrication work as needed to repair or reinforce parts of trucks or trailers.
  • Component Overhaul: Overhaul critical mechanical components such as engines, transmissions, differentials, and final drive assemblies, ensuring all parts meet manufacturer specifications and safety standards.
  • Road Testing: Perform road tests to ensure repairs have been successfully completed and that vehicles are fully operational and compliant with road safety regulations.
  • Record Keeping: Accurately document all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, time spent, and job details, using the company's job management system.
  • Compliance and Safety: Adhere to all workplace health and safety regulations, ensuring a safe working environment. This includes wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), ensuring proper disposal of waste materials, and following all safe work procedures.
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with other mechanics and workshop staff to ensure efficient workflow, sharing knowledge, and assisting junior team members when necessary.

Skills and Qualifications:

To be successful in this role, you must meet the following qualifications and possess the necessary skills:

  • Cert III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology or an equivalent qualification is essential.
  • Minimum 3 years of post-qualification experience as a heavy diesel mechanic, with demonstrable experience in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy diesel trucks and trailers.
  • Strong Diagnostic Skills: Proven experience in using diagnostic tools and equipment to troubleshoot issues related to engines, transmissions, differentials, air and hydraulic brakes, electrical systems, and suspension components.
  • Experience with Diesel Engines: Expertise in maintaining and repairing a variety of diesel engines, including Cummins, Detroit, Caterpillar, and others.
  • Brake System Expertise: In-depth knowledge of both air brake and hydraulic brake systems, including the ability to inspect, adjust, and repair these systems to ensure compliance with Australian standards.
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems: Experience in repairing and maintaining hydraulic and pneumatic systems, particularly on float trailers and other heavy equipment.
  • Electrical Systems Proficiency: Ability to diagnose and repair electrical issues, including experience working with wiring, alternators, starters, and lighting systems.
  • Transmission and Driveline Experience: Skilled in servicing and overhauling transmissions, clutches, differentials, and driveline components.
  • Fabrication and Welding: Basic welding and fabrication skills to repair and reinforce components when necessary.
  • Safety-Oriented: Strong understanding of workplace health and safety standards, including the safe handling of tools and hazardous materials.
  • Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail, ensuring all repairs meet manufacturer specifications and safety requirements.
  • Australian Manual Drivers Licence: Preferred but not essential.
  • Kenworth Experience: Experience working on Kenworth trucks is advantageous but not required.
