An Electrical Engineer on a chemical tanker is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and troubleshooting of all electrical and electronic systems onboard. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the vessel's operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintenance of Electrical Systems: Oversee the maintenance of electrical motors, switchboards (main and emergency), and alarm systems. Ensure all electrical equipment functions optimally to prevent operational disruptions.
- Battery Management: Manage various batteries onboard, including those for emergency alarms, lifeboats, and generators. Regularly inspect and maintain these systems to ensure reliability during emergencies
- Fire Safety Systems: Responsible for the upkeep of fire detection and alarm systems to ensure compliance with safety regulations and protect crew and cargo.
- Navigational Equipment: Maintain navigational lights and other essential equipment to guarantee safe navigation during operations.
- Refrigeration and Air Conditioning: Ensure the proper functioning of refrigeration units in the engine room as well as air conditioning systems throughout the vessel.
- Support During Operations: Be present in the engine room during maneuvers to address any electrical emergencies that may arise. Assist other engineers in routine maintenance tasks and troubleshooting.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs performed on electrical systems. Report any issues to the Chief Engineer promptly.
Qualifications
- Education: A degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field is typically required. Certification as an Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) is be preferred or required depending on company policies.
- Experience: Previous experience working on chemical tankers or similar vessels is highly desirable. Familiarity with maritime electrical systems is essential.
- Skills: Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills are critical. Proficiency in English is often required for a safe international operations.
