Job Description: Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) on a Large Passenger Vessel
Overview
The Electro-Technical Officer (ETO) on a large passenger vessel is responsible for the maintenance and operation of all electrical and electronic systems onboard. This role is crucial for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and reliability of the vessel's technical operations, particularly in areas that require high electrical demands, such as navigation, communication, and entertainment systems.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance of Electrical Systems:
- Oversee the maintenance and repair of all electrical equipment, including generators, motors, lighting systems, and control panels.
- Conduct regular inspections of electrical systems to ensure optimal performance and compliance with safety standards.
2. Operation of Technical Equipment:
- Monitor and operate various onboard systems such as navigation aids (e.g., radar, ECDIS), communication systems, and emergency power supplies.
- Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to electrical and electronic equipment.
3. Safety Compliance:
- Ensure all electrical installations comply with international safety regulations (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL).
- Participate in safety drills and maintain emergency equipment, ensuring readiness for any emergency situation.
4. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs performed on electrical systems.
- Report any incidents or malfunctions to the Chief Engineer promptly.
5. Collaboration with Other Departments:
- Work closely with the Chief Engineer and other engineering staff to coordinate maintenance schedules and operational procedures.
- Assist in training junior crew members on electrical safety practices and equipment handling.
6. Emergency Response:
- Be prepared to respond to emergencies involving electrical failures or hazards.
- Participate in emergency drills related to fire safety and other onboard emergencies.
7. Inventory Management:
- Manage spare parts inventory for electrical equipment; ensure that necessary parts are available for maintenance tasks.
- Coordinate with shore-based suppliers for procurement of technical equipment as needed.
Requirements
- Qualifications:
- Valid STCW certification (including ETO Certificate of Competency).
- Relevant maritime qualifications in electrical or electronic engineering.
- Experience:
- Previous experience as an ETO on passenger vessels or similar ships is preferred.
- Familiarity with marine electrical systems and troubleshooting techniques.
- Skills:
- Strong understanding of electrical theory and practical skills in troubleshooting.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and software related to marine electronics.
