Overview

The 3rd Officer on a large passenger vessel is a key member of the deck department, primarily responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the ship and its passengers. This role involves watchkeeping duties, passenger operations, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations while assisting senior officers in their responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

1. Watchkeeping Duties:

- Stand navigational watches as per the vessel' schedule or as directed by the Chief Officer.

- Monitor navigational equipment and maintain a proper lookout to ensure the safe navigation of the vessel.

- Assist in passage planning and ensure all navigational charts and publications are up-to-date.

2. Safety Equipment Maintenance:

- Conduct regular inspections and maintenance of life-saving appliances (LSA) and firefighting equipment (FFE).

- Maintain records of safety equipment checks and report any deficiencies to the Chief Officer.

- Participate in safety drills and emergency response training to ensure readiness for emergencies.

3. Administrative Duties:

- Assist in routine paperwork as required by the Chief Officer or Master.

- Maintain logs related to watchkeeping, and safety equipment inspections.

- Support environmental policies by preventing pollution and reporting any incidents.

4. Security Responsibilities:

- Ensure compliance with ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security) codes during watch periods.

- Monitor access points to the vessel and maintain security protocols while in port.

5. Emergency Preparedness:

- Be prepared to respond to emergencies such as man overboard situations, fire outbreaks, or medical emergencies.

- Understand emergency procedures and participate actively in drills.

Requirements:

- Qualifications:

- Valid STCW certification (including Officer of the Watch certification).

- Relevant maritime qualifications (e.g., a degree in Marine Engineering or Nautical Science).

- Experience:

- Previous experience as a 3rd Officer or similar role on passenger vessels of the same size is preferred.

- Skills:

- Strong command of English; additional languages are an asset.

- Proficiency in using navigational instruments (e.g., radar, ECDIS) and communication equipment.

- Personal Attributes:

- Strong attention to detail and ability to work under pressure.

- Excellent teamwork skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
