Overview
The Chief Engineer on a passenger vessel is the senior officer responsible for the management and operation of all engineering systems and machinery onboard. This role is critical to ensuring the safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operation of the vessel's technical systems, including propulsion, power generation, and auxiliary machinery.
Key Responsibilities
1. Management of Engine Room Operations:
- Oversee all operations within the engine room, ensuring that all machinery functions smoothly without breakdowns.
- Manage the engineering team, providing guidance and leadership to ensure effective performance.
2. Maintenance and Repair:
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules for all machinery and equipment, including main engines, generators, pumps, and HVAC systems.
- Conduct regular inspections and repairs to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational efficiency.
3. Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure adherence to international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL) and company policies regarding safety and environmental protection.
- Conduct safety drills and training for engineering staff to prepare for emergencies.
4. Energy Management:
- Monitor fuel consumption and optimize engine performance to enhance energy efficiency.
- Implement strategies for reducing emissions in line with environmental regulations.
5. Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, repairs, and inventory of spare parts.
- Prepare reports on engine room performance for the vessel's management and regulatory bodies.
6. Emergency Preparedness:
- Lead emergency response efforts related to engine room incidents, including fires, flooding, or equipment failure.
- Ensure all emergency equipment is operational and that crew members are trained in its use.
7. Budgeting and Inventory Management:
- Manage the engineering budget, including planning for repairs, maintenance, and spare parts procurement.
- Oversee the inventory of spare parts and supplies needed for engine room operations.
8. Collaboration with Other Departments:
- Work closely with the Captain and other department heads to ensure seamless operations across the vessel.
- Participate in bridge meetings to discuss navigation plans that may affect engine performance.
9. Continuous Improvement:
- Stay updated on new technologies and practices in marine engineering to enhance operational efficiency.
- Participate in audits and inspections to ensure compliance with industry standards.
Requirements
- Qualifications:
- Valid STCW certification (including Chief Engineer's Certificate of Competency).
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- Experience:
- Significant experience in marine engineering roles, with a minimum of 2-3 years as a 2nd Engineer or similar position on passenger vessels or large ships.
- Needs to have Bergen engines experience
- Skills:
- Strong technical knowledge of marine engineering systems and machinery.
- Excellent leadership, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
