The 2nd Engineer on a cable layer vessel plays a critical role in supporting the Chief Engineer in the operation and maintenance of the vessel's machinery and systems. This position is vital for ensuring the safe and efficient functioning of the engine room, particularly in specialized operations such as laying underwater cables.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Engine Room Operations:
    • Assist the Chief Engineer in managing all operations within the engine room.
    • Supervise junior engineers (3rd and 4th Engineers) and other engine room staff, ensuring adherence to safety and operational protocols.
  1. Maintenance and Repairs:
    • Conduct regular inspections, maintenance, and repairs of machinery and equipment, including generators, pumps, and compressors.
    • Oversee planned maintenance systems (PMS) and ensure timely execution of maintenance tasks.
  1. Safety Management:
    • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols, including conducting risk assessments and safety training for engine room personnel.
    • Manage emergency equipment and systems under SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea) regulations.
  1. Pollution Prevention:
    • Responsible for pollution prevention equipment, including oil-water separators (OWS) and sewage treatment plants.
    • Implement and manage pollution prevention plans, ensuring compliance with MARPOL regulations.
  1. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain accurate records of machinery operations, maintenance activities, and inventory of spare parts.
    • Prepare reports on engine room performance and any incidents that occur during operations.
  1. Operational Support:
    • Assist with fuel oil transfer operations, bunkering processes, and monitoring fuel consumption.
    • Ensure proper functioning of life-saving appliances (LSA) and firefighting equipment (FFA).
  1. Training and Development:
    • Mentor junior engineers in operational procedures, safety practices, and emergency response protocols.
    • Participate in ongoing training to stay updated on industry standards and technological advancements.

Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • Valid offshore certificates (STCW).
    • Relevant maritime engineering qualifications (e.g., Marine Engineering degree or equivalent).
  • Experience:
    • Previous experience working on cable layer vessels or similar offshore vessels is preferred.
    • Familiarity with the specific operational requirements of cable laying activities.
  • Skills:
    • Strong command of the English language; additional languages are a plus.
    • Excellent leadership abilities to effectively manage a team in high-pressure environments.
