Job Description: Master of Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC)

Overview

The Master of a Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) is the highest-ranking officer responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel. This role encompasses overall command, navigation, cargo operations, crew management, and compliance with international maritime regulations. The Master ensures that all operations are conducted in accordance with company policies, safety standards, and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Navigation and Ship Handling:
    • Ensure safe navigation of the VLGC by planning and executing voyages in compliance with maritime regulations.
    • Use navigational equipment and technology to monitor the vessels position and course.
  1. Cargo Operations:
    • Oversee loading, transportation, and discharge of liquefied gas cargoes, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and regulations.
    • Manage the cargo handling team to ensure safe and efficient operations during loading and unloading.
  1. Safety and Emergency Management:
    • Implement safety management systems and ensure compliance with the International Safety Management (ISM) Code.
    • Lead emergency response efforts in case of incidents such as spills, fires, or other emergencies on board.
  1. Crew Management:
    • Supervise and manage the crew, ensuring they are adequately trained and competent to perform their duties.
    • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide guidance to crew members.
  1. Regulatory Compliance:
    • Ensure compliance with international maritime laws, including SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), MARPOL (Marine Pollution), and other relevant regulations.
    • Maintain accurate records related to safety drills, inspections, and cargo operations.
  1. Communication:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact between the vessel and company management, as well as external parties such as port authorities.
    • Communicate effectively with crew members to promote a positive working environment.
  1. Maintenance Oversight:
    • Ensure that all safety equipment, navigational aids, and machinery are maintained in good working order.
    • Coordinate with the Chief Engineer regarding maintenance schedules and repairs.
  1. Financial Management:
    • Manage the vessel's budget related to operational costs, including fuel consumption, port fees, and maintenance expenses.
    • Prepare reports on operational performance for company management.

Requirements

  • Qualifications:
    • Valid Masters Certificate of Competency (STCW).
    • Specialized training in gas carrier operations is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a senior officer position on gas carriers or similar vessels.
    • Proven experience in managing crew and conducting cargo operations on VLGCs.
  • Skills:
    • Strong leadership and decision-making abilities.
    • Excellent communication skills in English; additional languages are an advantage.
    • Proficiency in using navigational equipment and software.
