Overview

The Pumpman on a chemical tanker is a crucial member of the deck department, responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the vessel's liquid cargo transfer systems. This role involves handling various pumping equipment and ensuring compliance with safety regulations while managing the transfer of hazardous materials.

Key Responsibilities

1. Cargo Operations:

- Safely load, discharge, and transfer chemical cargoes as per operational procedures.

- Monitor cargo levels and pressures to ensure they remain within safe limits during operations.

2. Equipment Maintenance:

- Operate and maintain all cargo pumps, stripping pumps, separators, valves, and associated piping systems.

- Conduct regular inspections of cargo tanks, pipelines, and valves to identify potential issues and perform necessary repairs.

3. Safety Compliance:

- Adhere to safety protocols and regulations related to handling hazardous materials, including MARPOL and SOLAS guidelines.

- Participate in safety drills and ensure that all crew members are familiar with emergency procedures related to cargo handling.

4. Documentation:

- Maintain accurate records of cargo operations, including loading and discharging activities.

- Report any incidents or anomalies during operations to the Chief Officer.

5. Team Collaboration:

- Work closely with the Chief Officer and other crew members to coordinate cargo operations effectively.

- Assist in the training and development of junior crew members regarding cargo handling procedures and safety practices.

6. Emergency Response:

- Be prepared to respond to emergencies involving spills or leaks in the cargo system.

- Participate in firefighting and other emergency response drills as required.

Requirements

- Experience:

- Minimum of 2 years experience as a Pumpman on chemical tankers or similar vessels.

- Qualifications:

- Valid STCW certification and relevant maritime qualifications.

- Knowledge of chemical handling procedures and equipment.

- Skills:

- Strong understanding of liquid cargo transfer systems, including pumps, valves, and automation technology.

- Excellent communication skills and ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

- Personal Attributes:

- Attention to detail and strong problem-solving abilities.

- Ability to work effectively as part of a team while also being self-motivated.
