Job Description:

Position Title: Junior Seaman
Department: Deck
Reports To: Bosun or Officer on Watch
Location: Onboard Cruise Ship

Position Summary:
The Junior Seaman supports the Deck Department in maintaining the exterior areas of the ship, assisting with mooring operations, and ensuring safety procedures are followed at sea and in port. This entry-level role offers hands-on experience in seamanship and is a key part of the ships operational and safety teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in mooring and unmooring operations under supervision.

  • Participate in routine maintenance tasks, including painting, cleaning, and general upkeep of ship exteriors.

  • Stand watch and assist in lookout duties on the bridge as assigned.

  • Help secure equipment and areas during rough seas or emergencies.

  • Follow instructions from senior deck officers and the Bosun during deck operations.

  • Assist in launching and recovery of tenders or lifeboats during drills and operations.

  • Ensure deck tools and equipment are clean, properly stored, and maintained.

  • Participate in onboard safety drills and emergency procedures.

  • Adhere strictly to maritime and onboard safety regulations.

Requirements:

Experience:

  • Prior maritime experience or training preferred but not essential.

  • Onboard or port-based vessel experience is an advantage.

  • Basic understanding of shipboard life and seamanship.

Skills:

  • Willingness to learn and take direction.

  • Good physical condition and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Team player with a strong work ethic and positive attitude.

  • Basic knowledge of ropes, knots, and general deck equipment is a plus.

Education/Certifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

  • STCW Basic Safety Training and valid seafarer medical certificate (e.g., ENG1) required before embarkation.

  • Additional seafarer certifications may be required depending on flag state and cruise line policy.
