Job Summary: We are currently seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Chief Sommelier to join our cruise ship team. As the Chief Sommelier, you will be responsible for curating an exceptional wine program and providing outstanding wine service to our guests. Your expertise, leadership skills, and passion for wine will contribute to creating unforgettable dining experiences on board.
Responsibilities:
- Wine Program Management: Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive wine program that aligns with the cruise ship's culinary offerings and guest preferences.
- Wine Selection and Procurement: Select and source a diverse range of high-quality wines, taking into account factors such as taste profiles, vintages, regions, and food pairing possibilities.
- Wine Inventory and Cellar Management: Oversee the organization, inventory control, and rotation of wines, ensuring proper storage conditions and optimal stock levels.
- Wine Training and Education: Conduct wine training sessions for dining and bar staff to enhance their knowledge of wines, including grape varieties, regions, production methods, and service techniques.
- Wine Service: Provide expert wine recommendations and advice to guests, guiding them through the wine list and assisting with food and wine pairings to enhance their dining experience.
- Wine Events and Tastings: Plan and execute wine tastings, wine-pairing dinners, and other special events to educate guests and promote the wine program.
- Guest Relations: Establish rapport with guests, building relationships to understand their preferences and offer personalized wine recommendations and experiences.
- Vendor Relationships: Foster strong relationships with wine suppliers, negotiate contracts, and ensure timely deliveries and competitive pricing.
- Cost Control and Budgeting: Monitor and control wine-related costs, analyze sales data, and contribute to budget planning and forecasting.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and policies, including responsible alcohol service, safety procedures, and health standards.
Qualifications:
- Wine Expertise: Extensive knowledge of wines, including different grape varieties, regions, vintages, and production methods. Certification from reputable wine education programs (such as WSET) is highly desirable.
- Experience: Proven experience as a Sommelier in high-end restaurants, hotels, or cruise ships. Previous leadership or supervisory experience is preferred.
- Service Excellence: A passion for delivering exceptional customer service and a demonstrated ability to interact with guests in a professional, friendly, and knowledgeable manner.
- Communication Skills: Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate wine information and recommendations to guests and team members effectively.
- Leadership Skills: Strong leadership and mentoring abilities to train and motivate a team of sommeliers and dining staff.
- Multicultural Awareness: Cultural sensitivity and the ability to cater to a diverse international clientele, understanding their preferences and adapting the wine program accordingly.
- Organizational Skills: Exceptional organizational skills to manage wine inventory, track sales, and maintain accurate records.
- Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to handle guest inquiries, complaints, and special requests related to the wine program.
- Adaptability: Willingness to work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, adjusting to the ship's schedule and itinerary changes as required.
- Language Skills: Proficiency in English is required. Additional language skills are advantageous, particularly those commonly spoken by cruise ship guests.
