About the job Fractional CPA Consultant – Nonprofit Accounting & Financial Oversight | Remote
Our client is seeking an experienced CPA to provide ongoing accounting oversight, financial review, and strategic accounting support. This position is ideal for a senior accounting professional who enjoys working in a consultative capacity and partnering with internal finance leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting, compliance, and strong financial controls.
The organization maintains streamlined accounting processes and established systems for day-to-day financial operations. As a result, this engagement is primarily focused on review, oversight, guidance, and accounting expertise rather than transactional accounting or bookkeeping. The successful consultant will provide an independent layer of financial oversight, support audit readiness, strengthen internal controls, and serve as a trusted advisor to finance leadership.

Work Model: Remote (US Based)
Work Schedule: Approximately 10-20 hours per month (hours may vary based on reporting cycles, month-end close, audit support, and year-end activities)
Please Note: This engagement is advisory and review focused. Day-to-day bookkeeping, transaction processing, accounts payable, payroll administration, and routine accounting operations are managed internally and are not primary responsibilities of this role.
Responsibilities:
- Identify opportunities to strengthen financial processes and controls.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
- Support periodic cash flow forecasting and financial planning activities.
- Partner with finance leadership to support accurate and timely financial reporting.
- Assist with audit readiness and serve as a resource during annual external audits.
- Provide additional consultation during peak reporting periods and fiscal year-end.
- Provide guidance on accounting policies, internal controls, and financial best practices.
- Review reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting schedules prepared by internal finance staff.
- Review monthly financial statements and provide oversight of the month-end and year-end close process.
- Review accounting treatment and reporting related to donations, grants, sponsorships, and other nonprofit revenue streams.
Qualifications (Must-Haves)
- Active CPA license in good standing.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Ability to work independently in a remote consulting environment.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- 8+ years of progressive accounting, financial reporting, or audit experience.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial statement preparation, internal controls, and audit support.
- Experience working with nonprofit organizations, grant-funded programs, foundations, or similar mission-driven entities.
Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with nonprofit fund accounting principles.
- Experience supporting annual financial statement audits.
- Experience reviewing restricted funding, grant compliance, and revenue recognition.
- Experience working with cloud-based accounting and financial reporting systems.
- Experience serving as a Fractional Controller, Consulting CPA, or outsourced accounting advisor.
