About the job Safety Director

Safety Director

Location: Houston, TX
Compensation: $100,000–$125,000 annually, based on experience, plus annual performance-based bonus
Travel: Approximately one week per month to Dallas and New Orleans

Position Overview

We're partnering with an established commercial and industrial concrete services company to identify a proactive, experienced Safety Director to lead and strengthen its company-wide safety program. With operations spanning multiple divisions, a large fleet of service vehicles, and crews working on complex construction sites, this organization needs a hands-on safety leader who can build a strong safety culture, reduce incidents, and ensure employees have the training, resources, and accountability needed to work safely.

This is an opportunity for someone who wants to take ownership of an entire safety program, evaluate existing processes, introduce new ideas, and make a measurable impact across the organization. The ideal candidate brings a strong background in construction safety, understands both jobsite and fleet safety, and can operate independently while partnering with division leaders and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the Company-Wide Safety Program: Take ownership of the safety program across multiple divisions, evaluate current policies and procedures, identify gaps, and implement improvements that strengthen safety performance and reduce risk.
  • Build a Strong Safety Culture: Engage employees, supervisors, and division managers in safety initiatives. Promote accountability, encourage hazard reporting, and establish a proactive approach to preventing incidents rather than simply reacting to them.
  • Conduct Jobsite Inspections: Regularly visit active construction sites to assess working conditions, identify hazards, verify compliance, and ensure corrective actions are completed.
  • Manage Fleet and Driver Safety: Oversee driver safety initiatives for a fleet of approximately 80 vehicles. Review vehicle accidents and near misses, identify trends, implement preventive measures, and improve driver accountability.
  • Lead Incident Investigations: Respond to jobsite incidents, vehicle accidents, and near misses. Determine root causes, document findings, coordinate corrective actions, and work with relevant parties to reduce future incidents and losses.
  • Oversee Safety Training: Develop and coordinate safety training for employees and supervisors, including OSHA requirements, fall protection, confined spaces, heavy equipment, and other job-specific hazards. Identify training gaps and ensure required certifications and competent-person designations are maintained.
  • Manage Safety Documentation and Compliance: Maintain OSHA 300 logs and related records, review EMR performance, and ensure safety documentation is accurate and up to date.
  • Coordinate Customer Safety Requirements: Oversee safety submittal packages and maintain company compliance with customer and contractor requirements, including ISNetworld and Avetta.
  • Partner with Division Leadership: Work closely with division managers and operational leaders to implement consistent safety standards, address concerns, and ensure safety practices are followed across all locations.
  • Improve Risk and Claims Performance: Analyze accident trends, identify opportunities to reduce claims and insurance costs, and track the effectiveness of safety initiatives.
  • Provide Leadership and Accountability: Establish clear expectations, monitor program performance, communicate results to leadership, and help build a scalable safety program that supports continued company growth.

Qualifications

  • OSHA 30 certification is required.
  • At least two years of safety management or safety program oversight experience, preferably with five or more years of progressive safety experience.
  • Direct experience in commercial construction safety is strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing a company-wide safety program across multiple crews, divisions, projects, or locations is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, including fall protection, confined space safety, heavy equipment operations, and other construction-related hazards.
  • Familiarity with OSHA 300 logs, Experience Modification Rate (EMR), incident investigations, and safety documentation.
  • Experience with ISNetworld, Avetta, and customer-specific safety compliance requirements.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing construction safety submittal packages.
  • Background in fleet safety, driver training, vehicle accident investigations, and risk reduction is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to develop and deliver safety training and coordinate competent-person requirements.
  • OSHA 500 certification is a plus, particularly for candidates who can teach OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 courses.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills, with the ability to influence employees at every level.
  • Must be comfortable working independently, making decisions, and managing priorities without constant supervision.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Dallas and New Orleans approximately one week per month and visit active jobsites as needed.

What Makes This Opportunity Different?

This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on employee safety, operational performance, and the company's long-term success. Rather than stepping into a narrowly defined compliance position, you'll have the autonomy to evaluate the existing program, implement improvements, and establish the processes and culture needed to support a growing organization.

The Safety Director will work closely with leadership and division managers, with the opportunity to become an integral part of the executive team as the role develops.

Ideal Candidate

The strongest candidate is a self-motivated safety professional who has built, managed, or significantly improved a safety program—not simply maintained an existing one. They understand that effective safety management requires a combination of training, consistent field presence, employee engagement, documentation, and accountability.

This person is comfortable investigating an accident one day, conducting a jobsite inspection the next, and presenting a broader plan to leadership the following day. They take initiative, follow through on commitments, and are motivated by building a safer, more accountable organization.
